The prevalence of congenital uterine anomalies in unselected and high-risk populations: a systematic review

Abstract: BACKGROUNDThe prevalence of congenital uterine anomalies in high-risk women is unclear, as several different diagnostic approaches have been applied to different groups of patients. This review aims to evaluate the prevalence of such anomalies in unselected populations and in women with infertility, including those undergoing IVF treatment, women with a history of miscarriage, women with infertility and recurrent miscarriage combined, and women with a history of preterm delivery.METHODSSearches of MEDLINE, EMB… Show more

“…Potentially relevant congenital Mullerian tract anomalies include unicornuate, didelphic, bicornuate, septate or arcuate uteri. The presence of a uterine septum was not only the most prevalent congenital defect, but also the only congenital defect to be more common in patients with primary RM, occurring in this group at more than double the rate of septal defects among the women in the general population [5,13,21,29,36,67].…”

“…In a Finnish study conducted in 165 nulliparous women the mean width of the uterine cavity, measured by ultrasonography, was 24.4 mm, ranging from 13.8 to 35.0 mm. In 2/3 of these young women the transverse width was less than this distance [31]. Without the aid of ultrasonic measurements physicians may be routinely, unknowingly inserting devices of sizes approaching 32 mm in uteri much too small to accommodate them.…”

“…Bicornuate uteri are uncommon (0.4%) and 0.1% of cases present with a unicornuate uterus. The prevalence of uterus didelphys is approximately 0.3% in an unselected population [31,32].…”

“…Congenital uterine anomalies (CUA), a rather common benign condition with a prevalence of 4-7% [1], result from the abnormal formation, fusion or resorption of Mullerian ducts during fetal life [2]. Depending on the type and degree of anatomical alteration, CUA are associated with relatively serious complications affecting the reproductive life.…”
