The prevalence of congenital and early-onset hearing loss in Jordanian and Israeli infants

Abstract: The objective of the study was to investigate the prevalence of congenital and early-onset hearing loss, and the influence of the known risk factors for hearing loss on infants in Jordan and Israel. Subjects were a total of nearly 17,000 infants from both countries, including infants with and without risk factors for hearing loss. The hearing screening protocol included distortion product otoacoustic emission, followed in case of repeated OAE referral or high risk (HR) infant by diagnostic auditory brainstem r… Show more

“…The mean age of babies in the out-patient department is consistent with the mean age of 47 days for screening infants at mother-child clinics who were missed by hospital-based screening [30] but reflects the increased difficulty of screening babies once they have been discharged until the sixth week post-natal visit. This is typical with mothers in our study who insisted on being discharged on days when screening was not being undertaken such as on public holidays.…”

“…The incidence of PCEHL of 5.3 per 1000 for all categories of permanent hearing loss (30 dB nHL) based on the total enrolment for this study is comparable to the 5.2 in Taiwan [37], 5.6 in Hong Kong [25] and India [38] but lower than the 7.9 in Pakistan [31], 11.4 in Jordan [30], 12.0 in Oman [28]. These rates seem to justify the current global estimate of at least 6 per 1000 previously postulated for developing countries [39], in contrast to the 2-4 per 1000 estimated for developed countries [40].…”

“…18,34,35 NNJ is the most common condition requiring evaluation and hospital admission in the first week of life 36 and constitutes a significant cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity. 37 Although icterus neonatorum at serum levels not exceeding 5-6 mg/dl (86-103mmol/l) is a benign transitional phenomenon in the vast majority of neonates, excessive unconjugated bilirubin may lead to kernicterus and sensorineural hearing loss.…”

“…The specific paradigm and the recent rates of hearing loss detected by the program in nonrisk and high-risk babies have been recently reported [Attias et al, 2006a], as well as the clinical features, risk factors, and hearing management outcome of 26 children with AN identified by the program or referred to our center [Raveh et al, 2006].…”
