The prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia in mainland China: evidence from epidemiological surveys

Abstract: The epidemiological characteristics of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) in mainland China are not completely understood. We performed this meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of BPH from 1989 through 2014. A total of 14 articles and 19 datasets were included. The pooled overall prevalence of BPH among men aged 40 years and older was 36.6% [95% CI, 32.3–44.8]. The occurrence rate of BPH in the age groups 40–49 years, 50–59 years, 60–69 years, 70–79 years and 80 years and older was 2.9%, 29.0%, 44.7%, 58.1% … Show more

“…Secondly, most of publications (25/29) included in this study were retrospective observational studies, which were considered moderate evidence, and so the conclusions drawn in this analysis were restricted by this study type. Thirdly, significant heterogeneity was observed in the study, which was not surprising as heterogeneity often exists in such meta-analysis of overall prevalence454647. Although subgroup and meta-regression analyses did indicate geographic region, survey year, and percentage of multiparous to explain the observed heterogeneity, the remainder among the studies could be unexplained by the variables examined.…”

“…Detailed STROBE quality assessment. The total score, ranged from 0 to 10, represented the summary assessment of bias risk for each study and was used to assess the risk of bias for the individual studies46. When there was a disagreement, it was solved by consensus of the whole team.…”

“…It is highly prevalent in China. The overall prevalence of BPH among men aged over 40 years is about 36.6% (Wang et al, 2015). And this occurrence rate reaches 58.1% and 69.2% for men in their 70s and 80 years or older (Wang et al, 2015).…”

Although it is not life-threatening, BPH has substantial negative impact on patients' quality of life and overall health perception (Choi et al, 2014) and brings considerable financial burden on the patients' families and society (Yoshida et al, 2015).…”

“…In the Chinese study done by Wang et al the occurrence rate of BPH was in age groups of 40-49 years was 2.9%, 50-59 years 29%, 60-69 years 44.7%, 70-79 years 58.1 and 80 years and older was 69.2%. 3 The prevalence rate increases with the age. In a Korean study, there were 2 patients (4.4%) in the 40-49 years group, 18 patients (10.9%) in 50-59 years group, 44 patients (22%) in the age group of 60-69 years group and 56 patients (26.6%) above the age of 70 years.…”
