The Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation among Acute Medical Admissions in Kuwait

Abstract: Objective: To establish the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) among acute medical admissions to the Adan Hospital, Kuwait, and to evaluate the clinical features of the patients. Subjects and Methods: Of 2,833 acute medical admissions to the Adan Hospital from January 1 to May 31, 2003, 120 patients with AF were included in the study. The patients were divided into paroxysmal or persistent (PPAF), and chronic atrial fibrillation (CAF). The prevalence of stroke and clinical features of the CAF patients with… Show more

“…18 There has been recent increased interest in AF because of the expected rise in its prevalence, the greater appreciation of its serious outcomes, and the development of new anticoagulant and antiarrhythmic medications for its management. 1,3,4,9 -13 Gulf SAFE is the first prospective, multinational, observational study of AF in the Arab Middle East.…”

“…Little has been published regarding the effect of AF on subsequent development of CE, although these conditions are often comorbid [18,38], and the reverse relationship -an effect of CE on subsequent development of AF -has been observed in longitudinal studies [17,21]. The present longitudinal study is, to our knowledge, the first to show that AF predisposes towards a subsequent diagnosis of CE.…”

“…Limited data on NVAF-associated thromboembolism specific to the MENA region suggest the 1-year rate of stroke or TIA in patients admitted to the hospital with AF is higher (4.2%) [11] than that in Western countries (0.5–2%) [12], [13], [14]. Adherence to antithrombotic guidelines in a European study was significantly correlated with better outcomes with respect to mortality, thromboembolism and bleeding [15].…”
