The Prevalence of Age-related Maculopathy in the Rotterdam Study

Abstract: The prevalence of atrophic or neovascular age-related macular degeneration is 1.7%. In those 55 years of age or older, the prevalence increases strongly with age and it is similar in men and women. Neovascular age-related macular degeneration was twice as common as atrophic age-related macular degeneration. These findings suggest that age-related maculopathy may be less common in this European population than in similar populations in the United States.

“…Interestingly, the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, and their percentage as cause for visual impairment or blindness was markedly lower in the Beijing Eye Study than in the population-based investigations in Western countries. [29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36] As in the population-based studies, the prevalence of epiretinal membranes was significantly associated with age. In addition, hyperopic refractive error was a factor associated with the frequency of epiretinal membranes in the present study.…”

“…These issues confront a large number of Spanish citizens. Although an ongoing, population-based study of the incidence or prevalence of NV-AMD in Spain will provide more accurate data, an analysis based on data from the Rotterdam trials 20,21 has estimated that there were 122 136 prevalent cases in Spain in 2006 and that there will be 162 759 such cases in 2025 (Pfizer Inc, data on file). On the basis of our sample of 100 patients, the epidemiologic profile of patients in Spain appears generally to be similar to that of patients worldwide: the average age is 470 years, 22 the majority of patients have 41 comorbidity, 23 and most lesions referred for PDT are predominantly classic.…”

“…The HADS contains 14 items, seven measuring anxiety and seven measuring depression. Individual item scores range from 0 to 3; total scores for both subscales are interpreted as normal (0-7), mild (8-10), moderate (11)(12)(13)(14), and severe (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21).…”

“…[1][2][3] For decades, the accumulation of drusen in the Bruch's membrane was considered the most important finding for the pathogenesis of the disease. Data accumulated in the last decade suggest that AMD may involve chronic inflammatory processes.…”
