The prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysms in the rural/urban population in central Poland — Gniewkowo Aortic Study

Abstract: The prevalence of AAA in men aged 65 years and older is seemingly larger than in previously conducted studies, while among men 60-64 years of age and women aged ≥ 65 it is similar. Older age, smoking, and a history of MI/ACS were the most important risk factors of AAA occurrence.

“…In both the patient cohort used for the micro-array RNA expression (Table 2) and the patient cohort population study we show a gender and age difference between AAA and occlusive disease patients with an overrepresentation of males in the AAA group as compared to the occlusive disease group (85.5% versus 66.9%, p < 0.001) [20]. This observation has also been described earlier as it is known that the incidence of AAA rises rapidly after the age of 55 years in men [10,13,15]. Therefore, our data reflect the actual AAA and occlusive disease patient population.…”

“…It is unclear if genetic factors affected in TAA also play a role in AAA, though a recent study identified overlapping genetic defects between AAA and familial TAA [12]. The prevalence of AAA is~6-9% among men older than 65 years of age [13][14][15] and is usually higher than for TAA with variations between populations globally [16]. Yet, in contrast to TAA, AAA causative genes have not been identified yet [17].…”

“…We set to study these two parameters starting as a study of 1000 individuals presenting to have abdominal ultrasonography at radiology department (elective). The introduction of population-based screening reduced mortality associated with AAA by 45% [8].…”

“…We excluded 82 records because they were case reports/case series, 12 were comments, 10 were editorials, 9 clinical guidelines, 80 were systematic reviews, 13 were meta-analysis, 573 were about other topics. 40 papers were considered for systematic review (Figure 1) 14 papers were considered in Meta-Analysis: 13 prevalence studies and 1 case-control hospitalbased study [4,[11][12][13]15,18,34,35,44,47,50,52,54,56].…”

“…Other more frequent risk factors associated with AAA are: age, gender, hypertension, family history and coronary artery disease [8]. Although the role of the hypertension is still controversial [9][10][11][12], while, in some studies hypertension is a risk factor [13][14][15].…”
