Despite a flurry of studies examining psychopathy in women, and the recent release of the second version of the Hare Psychopathy Checklist--Revised manual, there is still little consensus whether the lateral extension of the current conceptualization of psychopathy to women is appropriate. In particular, very little agreement exists concerning the clinical utility of the Hare psychopathy measures to assess women's risk of future offending and violence. This article presents a comprehensive review of studies of the association between psychopathy, antisocial behavior, and violence, in diverse samples of women, and looks at similarities and differences between these constructs in males and females. Findings from inmates and offenders, civil and forensic psychiatric patients, substance abusers, and community samples indicate a consistently lower base rate of psychopathy among women than among men. With some exceptions, correlates of psychopathy in women relevant to risk assessments for crime and violence tend to be modest and significant, generally mirroring what we see in men. Clinicians and policy makers charged with the care and management of women at risk for criminal offending and violence are likely to find the PCL-R and PCL:SV have clinical utility; however, cautious application is called for and ongoing research is required.

Few criminal justice topics have garnered as much attention as capital punishment. This voluminous literature ranges from constitutional and procedural issues to race issues and gender issues. While the intellectual and legal community has paid a great deal of attention to the role of race in capital punishment, as well as the role of gender in capital punishment, the extant literature is lacking with regard to AfricanAmerican women and the death penalty. To be clear, the lack of literature is not because there are no African-American women on death row. This article attempts to fill a void in the capital punishment literature through a qualitative analysis that explores the lives and crimes of African-American women on death row.

Women convicted of violent offenses represent a small but important subpopulation of women involved in the criminal justice system. Correctional administrators working with these women often rely on treatment and rehabilitation programs developed for violent male offenders. Although women's trajectories into violent behavior-as well as their trajectory out-differ from their male counterparts, the field is marked by the absence of interventions designed specifically for women with violent offenses. As attention grows in the research literature and in community settings about "women who use force" it is important to develop interventions that effectively modify aggressive behavior as well as the underlying precursors of such aggression. This paper describes a pilot study as one step in a developmental approach to intervention research. Beyond Violence, a gender specific and trauma-informed intervention, was piloted with 35 women incarcerated in a state prison with a conviction for a felony-level assault. Short-term outcomes assessed through changes in pre-and posttest measures show reductions in mental health symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, and serious mental illness. The encouraging results of this pilot study have led to the next step in the intervention research process of testing the program in a randomized controlled trial that is currently underway.
