Chronic tonsillitis is a recurrent inflammation of the tonsils that can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life. Tonsillectomy, the surgical removal of the palatine tonsils and their capsule, is performed based on specific indications and the Paradise criteria. This study aimed to observe the characteristics of patients who underwent tonsillectomy at Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou General Hospital Manado from January 2020 to October 2023. This descriptive retrospective study utilized a cross-sectional approach for data collection. Out of a total population of 66 patients who underwent tonsillectomy during the study period, 57 patients met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The majority of patients were in the teenage age group (12-25 years), accounting for 40 patients (70.2%), with a slight male predominance of 29 patients (50.9%). Most patients were students (19 patients, 33.3%), and the primary complaint was a history of recurrent swallowing pain, reported by 26 patients (45.6%). The most common tonsil size was T3-T3, found in 17 patients (29.8%). The majority of patients were hospitalized for 3-5 days (42 patients, 73.7%), and the most frequent complication was swallowing pain, experienced by 52 patients (91.2%). In conclusion, patients who underwent tonsillectomy surgery predominantly were aged 12-25 years, male, students, presented with recurrent swallowing pain, had T3-T3 sized tonsils, were hospitalized for 3-5 days, and most commonly experienced swallowing pain as a complication.

Objectives: The purpose of the study is to ascertain the relationship between the training program and the socio-demographic features of patients with peptic ulcers in order to assess the efficiency of the program on patients' nutritional habits. Methodology: Between January 17 and October 30 of 2022, The Center of Gastrointestinal Medicine and Surgery at Al-Diwanyiah Teaching Hospital conducted "a quasi-experimental study". A non-probability sample of 30 patients for the case group and 30 patients for the control group was selected based on the study's criteria. The study instrument was divided into 4 sections: the first portion contained 7 questions about demographic information, the second section 6 questions about the patient's medical history, the third section 2 questions concerning harmful behaviors, and the fourth section 9 questions about eating habits. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 26. Statistical analysis methods for both descriptive and inferential analysis were used to examine the study's findings. Results: The study's finding showed that the training program had a favorable impact on patients' understanding of good nutritional practices (the case group), as evidenced by a shift in the total mean from 1.40 at the pre-test to 2.39 at the post-test, while there was no difference for the control group. Conclusion: The instruction program have positive effect on the knowledge of patients with peptic ulcer then change their nutritional habits among case group. Recommendations: The study recommends to increasing the patient’s health awareness regarding nutritional habits and explained dietary , advice, guidelines by dietitian should be undertaken for peptic ulcer patients.

AIM: Chronic tonsillitis (CT) is a very common ear, nose, and throat disease worldwide, and in severe cases it can cause sleep apnea hypoventilation syndrome, which can affect the patient's health and can even be life-threatening. Low-temperature plasma radiofrequency tonsillectomy is one of the commonly used methods for treating CT with remarkable results, but more detailed reports are lacking. In this study, we aimed to explore the impact of low-temperature plasma radiofrequency tonsillectomy on pain, inflammatory markers, and sleep quality in adult CT patients for clinical reference. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on adult patients diagnosed with CT at our hospital between June 2019 and October 2023. Patients were categorized into a control group receiving traditional tonsillectomy and a treatment group undergoing low-temperature plasma radiofrequency tonsillectomy. The groups were compared in terms of baseline characteristics, surgical parameters, visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, 36-item short form (SF-36) health survey questionnaire scores, inflammatory markers, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores. Group differences in postoperative complications were also analyzed. RESULTS: There were 160 patients, 80 in the treatment group (50 males and 30 females, mean age 28.90 ± 2.46 years) and 80 in the control group (46 males, 34 females, mean age 28.89 ± 2.01 years). Differences between the two groups in terms of age, sex, duration of disease, smoking history, body mass index, and other baseline characteristics were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Operation time, intraoperative bleeding, return to normal diet, and pseudomembrane detachment time in the treatment group were all significantly lower than in the control group (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in VAS or SF-36 scores before treatment (p > 0.05). Post-treatment, both groups had lower VAS scores and higher SF-36 scores in the treatment group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in levels of inflammatory markers before treatment (p > 0.05). Both groups showed increased levels of inflammatory markers post-treatment, but the treatment group had lower post-treatment levels of Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and hypersensitive-C reactive protein (hs-CRP) than the control group (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed between the two groups in PSQI scores before treatment (p > 0.05). Following treatment, both groups had decreased PSQI scores, with lower scores in the treatment group than in the control group (p < 0.05). The complication rate was lower in the treatment group than in the control group, with rates of 8.75% and 23.75%, respectively (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Low-temperature plasma radiofrequency tonsillectomy for adult CT patients offers advantages such as shorter surgical time, reduced intraoperative bleeding, minimal trauma, and fewer postoperative complications. This procedure significantly alleviates pain, improves quality of life, reduces levels of inflammatory markers, and enhances sleep quality.
