The prevalence and management of diabetes among Vietnamese Americans: A population-based survey of an understudied ethnic group

Abstract: Objectives Although obesity remains relatively rare among Vietnamese Americans, the prevalence of diabetes has increased in this population. This study aims to:  1. Estimate the prevalence of diabetes among non-obese Vietnamese American adults compared to non-obese non-Hispanic whites (NHW).  2. Identify factors associated with diabetes among non-obese Vietnamese Americans.  3. Examine whether Vietnamese Americans and NHW with diabetes are equally as likely to receive optimal frequency of diabetes care (i.e., … Show more

“…Vietnamese Americans (VAs) have a higher susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) than non-Hispanic Whites, often presenting at a younger age and with lower body mass indexes (BMIs; De Souza et al, 2022; A. T. Nguyen et al, 2023). In a recent study, VAs with normal BMIs had 60% higher adjusted odds of developing diabetes than non-Hispanic Whites (De Souza et al, 2022). Currently, a national prevalence rate of T2DM among VAs remains unknown as VAs are categorized under the broader classification of Asian Americans (A. T. Nguyen & Jones, 2021).…”

“…Prediabetes has been associated with multiple other chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, cancer, and dementia [ 1 ]. Despite having a BMI within normal limits, Vietnamese Americans experience a disproportionate burden of diabetes with higher diabetes prevalence rates compared with non-Hispanic Whites, having 60% higher odds of diabetes ( P =.03) [ 2 ]. The average age of initial T2DM diagnosis in Vietnamese Americans is more than 5 years younger than that in non-Hispanic Whites [ 3 ].…”

“…The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been continuously on the rise among Vietnamese adults in the U.S. and in Vietnam (De Souza et al, 2022;Pham & Eggleston, 2016). Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that requires lifestyle management to maintain adequate glycemic levels and to prevent or delay the onset of complications.…”
