“…CHARLS was a longitudinal survey that aimed to be representative of the residents in mainland China aged 45 and older, with no upper age limit [30]. Multi-stage stratified probability-proportional-to-size sampling was used to conduct the survey, which randomly selected 150 counties/districts and 450 villages/resident committees, thereby covering 19,000 individuals living in 12,400 households [31] from 28 provinces (data from Hainan, Ningxia, and Tibet were missing), thus collecting a high-quality nationally representative sample [31][32][33][34].
