The Prevalence and Burden of Migraine and Severe Headache in the United States: Updated Statistics From Government Health Surveillance Studies

Abstract: This report summarizes the most recent government statistics on the prevalence and burden of migraine and severe headache in the US civilian and active duty military populations. The prevalence of migraine headaches is high, affecting roughly 1 out of every 7 Americans annually, and has remained relatively stable over the last 8 years. Migraine and headache are leading causes of outpatient and ED visits and remain an important public health problem, particularly among women during their reproductive years.

“…Investigations in the United States (US) and Europe revealed that migraine headaches influenced 6-9% of men and 15-19% of women. [6,10] A survey in the Russia indicated an even larger prevalence: 14.9% in men and 38.1% in women. [11] The higher rates in women all over (2-3 times those in men) could be hormonally motivated.…”

“…Triptans and prophylactic medications were very rarely prescribed. [10] According to WHO, internationally, only four hours are dedicated to headache syndromes in official undergraduate medical education, and 10 hours in consultant training. [9] Similarly, migraine headache managing guidelines developed by the American Headache Society and the American Academy of Neurology were exercised regularly only 55% of responding countries, but fewer in low-income countries.…”

“…[1][2][3][4] Prevalence is highest during an individual's peak productivity years, between the ages of 25 and 55,where it has significant impact on daily life with substantial functional impairment that include both physical and emotional ramifications. 2 The disease is principally characterized by recurrent attacks of unilateral headache that typically last 4 to 72 hours, associated with other neurological symptoms in addition to pain, such as nausea, photophobia, phonophobia, osmophobia and fatigue as well as numerous disturbances in autonomic, mental, sensory and motor functions. 2,5 The cumulative effect of long-term repeated attacks of migraine can lead to changes in brain structure and function, as well as the possible impact of cognitive function.…”

The cognitive function of migraine has attracted more and more attention of the researchers, but there are many research methods, the methods are not consistent and the results are not consistent.…”

“…Она встречается во взрослой популяции с частотой до 16-17% [1,2]. Экономические затраты, связанные с нетрудоспо-собностью больных, с диагностикой и терапией мигрени, очень велики и прямо сопоставимы даже с затратами на сердечно-сосудистые заболевания [3,4].Тяжелым осложнением мигрени является хрониче-ская мигрень (ХМ). Количество пациентов с ХМ в общей популяции составляет по современным оценкам от 0,4 до 2,4% [5].…”
