The Presence of Cytokines and Growth Factors in Hydrosalpingeal Fluid

Abstract: Purpose : To examine the presence of cytokines and growth factors in hydrosalpingeal fluid. Methods : Eighteen hydrosalpingeal fluids were compared with 15 follicular fluids and serum samples regarding the presence of interleukin-8 (IL-8), IL-12, IL-1α, epidermal growth factor (EGF), granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), interferon-γ (IFNγ ), and transforming growth factor-β 2 (TGFβ 2 ). Results : IL-8 and EGF were detected … Show more

“…Uterine macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells are a primary source of TNF in the reproductive tract, as well as oviductal epithelial cells of mice and women Bedaiwy et al 2005;Strandell et al 2004). TNF stimulates translocation of the nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) transcription factors to the nucleus, subsequently triggering transcription of various inflammatory mediators such as IL6 and IL1α (Iwamoto and Konicek 1997;Malinin et al 1997).…”

“…Each of these are elevated in ovarian carcinomas (Strandell et al 2004). It is well established that a combination of tubal ligation and hysterectomy is protective against ovarian cancer (Green et al 1997, Seidman et al 2002.…”

“…The development of the embryo before implantation is regulated by many embryotrophic molecules, growth factors, and cytokines produced in the lumen of the oviduct by maternal cells and the embryo itself. 24,25 Systemic infection or inflammation may disturb this network and induce infertility, even if the reproductive tract is not itself infected. T. cruzi is known to possess strong proinflammatory activities, 26 and the acute infection is associated with a strong inflammatory response, with systemic production of TNF-␣ 15 and interferon-␥ (IFN-␥).…”
