The preparation and structure of lower oxides of tungsten

A. Preparation.The equilibria of the oxides of tungsten with Hz and H,O and with CO and CO, are even now not known with certainty; the existent data in the literature are very contradictory I ) ; there is only agreement as to the non-existence of oxides between W and W02. According to Leiser the lower oxides formed by electrolytic reduction are W40,, and W 0 2 ').W e have therefore investigated once more which oxides between W and WO, are really stable. For this purpose mixtures of CO and CO, and of H2 and H20 are passed, at definite temperatures, over WO, spread out in a thin layer and the product formed is
