“…The C cage – C cage bond lengths and other interatomic bond lengths and angles are essentially the same in each cage. The C cage – C cage bond lengths [1.573(6), 1.582(6) Å] are considerably shorter than those in 3 but similar to those reported for such nido ‐C 2 B 9 cages (about 1.57 Å), although shorter than those reported for a nido ‐monoamide (1.67 Å) . The dihedral angle for C1–C2–C3/N2–C3–O2 [2.1(4)°] in cage 1 (left, Figure ) is smaller than that for C19–C18–C17/N4–C19–O4 [9.5(4)°] in cage 2 (right, Figure ).…”

“…Further examples were reported by Causey et al., Hawkins et al., Pruitt et al . and Louie et al . who used stable and hydrophobic rhenacarboranes including the [Re(L)(CO) 2 ] fragment (L=2,2′‐bipyridine derivative or [NO] + ) as imaging agents.…”

“…[4] One advantage of half-sandwich metallacarboranes is the incorporation of biologically relevant ligands in the coordination sphere of the metals, as in the present study, where [3-(2,2'bipyridine-k 2 N,N')-3-(CO) 2 -closo-3,1,2-MoC 2 B 9 H 11 ] (i) was equipped with a vector molecule which was inspired by the well-known tamoxifen. Further examples were reported by Causey et al, [10] Hawkins et al, [11] Pruitt et al [12] and Louie et al [13] who used stable and hydrophobic rhenacarboranes including the [Re(L)(CO) 2 ] fragment (L = 2,2'-bipyridine derivative or [NO] + ) as imaging agents.…”

“…However, it is important to consider other experimental evidence regarding the mechanism behind the extraordinary resistance to radiation of icosahedral-boron solids; alongside boron carbide there are several examples of materials that contain icosahedral boron structures, with other atoms occupying chain positions, such as boron phosphide 8 , arsenide 9 and oxide 10 . There are also several examples of heterosubstituted icosahedra with elements as varied as technetium 33 , tin or germanium at the icosahedral vertices 34 . It is feasible then, that the stabilisation of damaged icosahedra by the abstraction of a chain atom of a different element would be a viable mechanism to resistance of these solids to radiation.…”
