“…27), and β-carotene at ∼425, 451, and 483 nm. 39,40 The brown and red macroalgae had distinctly different signatures from one another and from the green algae. Once again, a distinct absorption maximum near 675 nm is conditioned by chlorophyll a absorption.…”

“…Each eluted pigment was drawn into a syringe, filtered as described above into chilled Eppendorf tubes (1.5 mL), bubbled with nitrogen gas, capped, and kept in a darkened ice bucket. The concentration of each pigment was determined spectroscopically at the wavelength for each pigment's absorption maximum using previously established extinction coefficients (Gillam 1935;MacKinney 1940;Zscheile et al 1942;Goodwin 1955;Davies 1965Davies , 1976Hager and Meyer-Bertenrath 1966;Liaaen-Jensen and Jensen 1971;Stransky 1978), after which the samples were bubbled with nitrogen gas in autosampler vials, sealed, and kept on ice/ refrigerated in darkness until injection into the HPLC system (three different volumes of each pigment sample) in order to provide the calibration for each pigment.…”

“…They did not determine the ranges of these calculated values. This study also included a few additional studies (Miller, 1937; Zscheile et al, 1942) examining the mass-specific absorption coefficients for α-, β-carotene, lycopene, xanthophyll, and zeaxanthin (Table 4). Mass-specific absorption and absorption coefficients for non-algal optically active constituents have also been determined (Table 4).…”
