The preload recruitable stroke work relationship as a measure of left ventricular contractile dysfunction in porcine cardiac allografts

Abstract: The porcine heart's susceptibility to ischaemic injury makes it ideal for evaluating the effect of different preservation strategies on contractile recovery. The PRSW relationship can be used to evaluate the differences in contractile recovery, though the nature of the effect of ischaemic preservation necessitates analysis by multiple linear regression.

“…Importantly, the preload recruitable stroke work relationship is a sensitive measure of porcine allograft left ventricular functional recovery after orthotopic transplantation. 22 The decrease of preload recruitable stroke work was attenuated in the allografts from donors treated with HTS, indicating beneficial effects on left ventricular recovery. Furthermore, the ability to wean from cardiopulmonary bypass was significantly greater in the donor HTS-treated group compared with control.…”

“…The significance of differences in the PRSW relationship was determined using a multiple linear regression (MLR) implementation of two-way analysis of covariance with repeated measures (30). To reduce potential confounders, LVV epi and SW were normalized within individual animals to their baseline steady state values.…”

“…A porcine model of the brain-dead organ donor which closely mimics the deceased human donor was used, as previously described (30). This model was approved by our animal ethics committee and was utilized in accordance with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (31).…”
