The predictive value of serum lipids for eye metastases in male nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients

Abstract: Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a tumor that is commonly found in southern China. NPC has several risk factors, such as infection with the Epstein–Barr virus. However, we know little about the risk factors for eye metastasis (EM) in male patients with NPC. Serum lipids are well recognized as risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and recent studies show that they also have a relationship with the development of NPC. Purpose: We designed the present study to determine whether they… Show more

“…Besides, different treatments were given for the management of the high levels of LDL-C in the patients. Therefore, the results can vary due to these factors, whereas the relation between VLDL-C and triglycerides with breast cancer risk was reported previously [ 17 , 21 , 22 , 31 , 34 ] and NPC [ 27 ].…”

“…OM is a rare type of NPC metastasis and, once it occurs, its prognosis is extremely poor. It is often accompanied by multiple metastases throughout the body and the clinical treatment for patients is often radiotherapy (25). To date, OM in breast cancer (26), lung cancer (27), gastric cancer (28), and esophageal cancer have been reported.…”

“…In contrast to the level in normal nasopharyngeal epithelium, the accumulation of lipid droplets in NPC increases greatly, which may be associated with downregulation of the lipolysis gene adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) via EBV-encoded LMP2A ( 56 ). Lipid-lowering drugs, such as lovastatin, can effectively inhibit nasopharyngeal oncogenesis ( 57 , 58 ).…”
