The predictive ability of self-rated health on ischaemic heart disease and all-cause mortality in elderly women and men: the Nord-Trondelag Health Study (HUNT)

Abstract: poor SRH predicted mortality in elderly people. For older women, the predictive value of poor SRH was higher than that of men, and this was true independent of age, marital status, diabetes, any limiting long-standing illness and selected biomedical, behavioural and psychosocial factors. These results are in contrast to most studies on the SRH-mortality association in elderly people. Further theoretical and empirical studies are needed to identify the particular factors that should be taken into account when e… Show more

“…All the physically active groups showed significantly higher HDL-cholesterol and lower triglyserides and wais circumference than the inactive women and men. SRH is widely used both in Norway and elsewhere and has repeatedly been indirectly validated against mortality [14,18,20,21]. In a review of twenty-seven longitudinal community studies [14] the authors conclude that SRH represent a source of valuable data on health status.…”

“…7 The association between self-rated health and coronary heart disease has been confirmed in cohorts at baseline free from cardiovascular disease: in elderly >70 years; in a population-based cohort of persons aged 39-74 years; in women with suspected myocardial ischaemia with major cardiovascular disease as the outcome. [8][9][10] A case-control study within the Västerbotten Intervention Programme cohort, showed a significant interaction between self-rated health and the number of…”
