Many factors are involved in urban heat island development, such as lack of green spaces, improper choice of building materials, densification, and other human activities. The aim of this research was to quantify the effects of land-use/land-cover (LU/LC) changes on urban land surface temperature (LST) during a 25-year period (1993-2018) for the semiarid Shiraz City in southern Iran using Landsat data (TM, ETM + , and OLI/TIRS) and machine learning algorithms. Five main LU/LC classes, such as orchard, vegetation, bare surface, asphalt cover, and built-up areas, were identified using a support vector machine algorithm. Landsat images were used to retrieve normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference built-up index (NDBI). The results showed that the mean LST over the entire study domain increased considerably between 1993 and 2018, due to urbanization, decrease of green areas, and increasing industrial areas. Built-up areas increased considerably by 25.8% from 80 to 100.6 km 2 between 1993 and 2018, while vegetation cover decreased dramatically by 69.3%. Mean LST increased from 38.4 to 40.2°C during the 25-year period with a significant increase of 3.9°C between 2013 and 2018. In addition, the Urban heat island Ratio Index (URI) displayed a substantial upward trend during the 25-year period.

Kuta Selatan Sub-district has experienced changes in land cover due to the development of urbanization in recent years. One of the main problems caused by the progress of this development is the Land Surface Temperature (LST), which can cause several issues such as adverse socio-economic and environmental impacts on the urban population. This study provides information for the future urban developer by considering the implications of future temperature growth for city dwellers' thermal comfort, which should assist in developing and implementing management strategies to reduce the effects of urban heat. We used Landsat 7 ETM + and Landsat 8 OLI-TIRS as data sources for spatial-temporal analysis of land cover and LST in Kuta Selatan Sub-district for 2006, 2015, 2020 and their predictions in 2033 using the CA-Markov model. The results showed that the built-up area and LST in 2033 experienced a significant increase in space and distribution in Jimbaran, Benoa, Tanjung Benoa, and the mean LST in Kuta Selatan Sub-district would increase, from 25.63°C in 2006 to 33.07°C in 2033. Built-up areas and bare soil produce higher LST than vegetation and water bodies. Thus, vegetation and water bodies play an essential role in LST mitigation. Based on these results, in the future, LST in Kuta Selatan Sub-district will be warmer compared to the present.

Monitoring microclimate variables within cities with high accuracy is an ongoing challenge for a better urban resilience to climate change. Assessing the intra-urban characteristics of a city is of vital importance for ensuring fine living standards for citizens. Here, a novel mobile microclimate station is applied for monitoring the main microclimatic variables regulating urban and intra-urban environment, as well as directionally monitoring shortwave radiation and illuminance and hence systematically map for the first time the effect of urban surfaces and anthropogenic heat. We performed day-time and night-time monitoring campaigns within a historical city in Italy, characterized by substantial urban structure differentiations. We found significant intra-urban variations concerning variables such as air temperature and shortwave radiation. Moreover, the proposed experimental framework may capture, for the very first time, significant directional variations with respect to shortwave radiation and illuminance across the city at microclimate scale. The presented mobile station represents therefore the key missing piece for exhaustively identifying urban environmental quality, anthropogenic actions, and data driven modelling toward risk and resilience planning. It can be therefore used in combination with satellite data, stable weather station or other mobile stations, e.g. wearable sensing techniques, through a citizens’ science approach in smart, livable, and sustainable cities in the near future.
