The Predictability of Synchronicity Experience: Results from a Survey of Jungian Analysts

Abstract: Fibonacci time patterns may predict future synchronistic events (SEs) by forecasting nonlinear dynamical interactions. This study examined if there were differences between observed distributions of Fibonacci time patterns matching SEs compared to expected distributions based on chance. An online survey link was e-mailed to a random sample of Jungian analysts drawn from membership lists of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP). Two experiments tested the hypothesis that Fibonacci algor… Show more

“…In essence, synchronicity experiences reflect “the coincidence of events in space and time as meaning something more than mere chance” ( Jung, 1950/1997 , p. 25). In the decades since Jung introduced the concept of synchronicity, interest in the topic has significantly grown ( Main, 2011 ; Hocoy, 2012 ; Sacco, 2019 ). Clinical case studies have demonstrated that an acknowledgment of synchronicity is beneficial in therapeutic settings ( Connolly, 2015 ; Roxburgh et al, 2015 ), as well as in understanding career pathways and processes (e.g., Guindon and Hanna, 2002 ).…”

“…Indeed, research thus far indicates a great variance in the reported occurrence of such events. An estimated 22 to 84% of the population reported experiencing synchronicity at least once ( Henry, 1993 ; Fach et al, 2013 ; Roxburgh et al, 2015 ; Sacco, 2019 )].…”

“…Few studies have explored topics such as the associations between synchronicity and demographic / personality variables (e.g., Attig et al, 2011;Beitman, 2011;Coleman et al, 2009;Costin et al, 2011;Russo-Netzer & Icekson, 2022), the occurrence of synchronicity within the context of psychotherapy (e.g., Roesler, 2014;Roesler & Reefschläger, 2021;Sacco, 2019), and methods to quantify the occurrence of synchronicity (e.g., Braud, 1983;Rowe & Henderson, 1995). These studies represent an important shift toward collecting empirical data on synchronicity to better understand how synchronistic phenomena operate in real-world settings, as well as an exploration of the potential mechanisms underlying synchronicity.…”
