The Pre-Moenkopi (Pre-Permian?) Unconformity of the Colorado Plateau

Abstract: sketch map (Fig. i). The second part of the paper begins with a summary of the known areal extent of the unconformity, and this is followed by a discussion of the magnitude of the stratigraphic break. Since the formation names are largely local and probably unfamiliar to most readers, the following partial columnar section is given. Jurassic, La Plata sandstone Dolores (Chinle) formation Triassic, Shinarump conglomerate DeChelly sandstone (local) Perian (), Moenkopi red beds ' W. T. Lee, "General Stratigraphic… Show more

“…This unconformity is well documented by many geologists (Howell, 1875;Gilbert, 1877;Button, 1880;and Gregory, 1917). Dake (1920) probably was the first to report the widespread extent and characteristics of the unconformity. During the long period of erosion, represented by the unconformity, the Kaibab limestone was completely removed from much of this area, and the Moenkopi formation rests directly upon the Coconino sandstone.…”

“…The top of the Kaibab Limestone, which forms the rim of Grand Canyon, is in the approximate position of the Permian-Triassic unconformity, although in only a few places on the rim do overlying Triassic rocks remain to preserve the ancient erosion surface. This unconformity has been the subject of many detailed studies: Dake (1920); Longwell (1925); Baker, Dobbin, McKnight,. and Reeside ( 1927) ;and McKee ( 1938, p. 55-:-61;).…”

“…Steed's work is published in a guidebook of the geology of the High Plateaus, which contains many papers regarding the geology of the region. Reports dealing primarily with stratigraphic problems in the Circle Cliffs and surrounding areas are those by Dake (1919Dake ( , 1920, Moore (1922), Longwell, Miser, Moore, Bryan, and Paige (1923), Baker, Dane, and Eeeside (1936), McKee (1938McKee ( , 1954a, Craig and others (1955), Stewart (1957), and Stewart, Williams, Albee, and Raup (1959).…”
