Three formulations of copper salts or copper complexes encapsulated by different kinds of polymers were locally prepared in the Polymers and Pigments Department. The biological activity of these compounds were studied against various types of fungal strains. The dose and the rate of leaching of copper ions were also studied. They were significantly controlled by the type of the polymer film used and the solubility in the medium. The effective doses of the biocide were (0.1-0.2 mg/ml). The different kinds of used polymers improved the tenacity of the fungicides on the leaf surfaces and improved the dispersion of copper salt suspension. The results provided laboratory support for the concept that the polymers containing chemically bound biocides were useful for controlling microorganisms growth. In field application, the role of polymer film is obviously clear in the protection of most copper salts or complexes that can be used in rainy and windy places to obtain both economic and environmental advantages. The copper uptake by fungal strains were studied to determine their difference in behavior to the biocidal activity of these compounds. The uptake strategy was examined by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). In addition, the cytological studies on and in cucumber leaves showed an efficient intracellular diffusion of copper ions. The acute toxicity of these compounds was also studied.

Metalworking fluids (MWF) are mainly emulsions of oil in water containing additives such as corrosion inhibitors, emulsifiers, defoamers, and biocides. Microbial contamination of MWF is almost systematic, and some of their constituents serve as nutrients for contaminating microorganisms. Biocides for MWF are protection products used to counter microbial contaminations and growth. Ideally, a biocide for MWF should have the following non-exhaustive criteria: have a broad-spectrum activity, be usable at low concentrations, be compatible with the formulation and the physical-chemical properties of MWF, be stable over time, retain its effectiveness in the presence of soiling, have no corrosive action on metals, present no danger to humans and the environment, be inexpensive. The future lies in the development of new molecules with biocidal activity corresponding to these ideal specifications, but in the meantime, it is possible to improve the performance of existing molecules currently on the market. Different strategies for potentiation of the activity of existing biocides are possible. The compatibility of the potentiation strategies with their use in metal working fluids is discussed.

The effect of ascorbigen and 1'-methylascorbigen as a model compound pair was studied on the phytopathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. phaseolicola in the BioArena experimental system after overpressured layer chromatography. Results showed a characteristic, strong antibacterial effect of 1'-methylascorbigen and weak effect of ascorbigen present on the adsorbent layer as chromatographic spot. Addition of formaldehyde capture compounds (L-arginine, glutathione, dimedone) partially or totally reduced the antibacterial effect of 1'-methylascorbigen and ascorbigen. On adding Cu(II) ions--which mobilize and coordinate formaldehyde--to the culture medium, the antibacterial effect of both compounds became stronger. It is supposed that the weak antibacterial effect of ascorbigen may have originated from the 1'-methylascorbigen formed in situ on the adsorbent layer by partial enzymatic methylation of ascorbigen.
