Objectives: To study the effect of compost and biochar on phytoremediation of crude oil-contaminated soil. Methods: An attempt was made to remediate crude oil contaminated soil, using the phytoremediation method. The soil was amended with biochar and compost. Initially, the pH, moisture content and C/N ratio of the soil and amendments were determined. A pot culture experiment was conducted to study the effect of the amendments on the degradation of the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) in the crude oil contaminated soil using the plant species nutgrass (Cyperus rotundus). To avoid seepage of water from the pots plastic pots were used. The initial concentration of TPH was found to be 17mg/kg soil. The experiment was conducted from January to March 2019. No microorganism was inoculated either to enhance the growth of the plant or degrade the hydrocarbon. The study was conducted with natural microflora. The pots were kept (open) under direct sunlight with 8 hours of photoperiodism. The plants were watered daily with tap water to maintain optimum moisture content. Once in 15 days, the soil samples collected from each treatment were analysed for pH, moisture content and C/N ratio. The TPH removal rate was determined for the 45 th day and 60 th day. Findings: The soil amended with compost (200 kg/soil) and biochar (50 kg/soil) enhanced the degradation of TPH by the plant species. The highest degradation percent of 62.2 and 77.1% was achieved on 45 th and 60 th day respectively in the treatment T5 (amended with biochar and compost). Further, there was an increase in shoot length (54.52 cm/plant), root biomass (0.74 g/plant) and shoot biomass (5.08g/plant) of the plants in the biochar and compost amended soil which was comparable with the results of the treatment T2 (Plants were grown in soil without crude oil contamination). Applications: Biochar and compost amendment improves the water holding capacity and nutrient status of the soil, thereby enhancing the growth of TPH degraders in soil. Hence, from the study, it is understood that biochar and compost could be used for phytoremediation of crude oil contaminated soils.

Peat utilization for agriculture expansion area is commonly found extensively in tropical region during the last few decades. Most agronomical practices involve drainage resulting decomposition of organic materials and increasing drying. This study was carried out to determine the potential use of molecular-sieving materials (MPMs) as an ameliorant for peat soil targeted for reducing the potential hazard of peat degradation. A clinoptilolite-zeolite, empty fruit bunches of oil palm biochar (EFBOPB), and their combination were studied its characteristics to evaluate the ability in adsorbing water and green-house gas emission. A series of laboratory analyses were conducted to determine physicochemical and mineralogical characteristics of both materials and its combination, including elemental analyses, cation exchange capacity (CEC), pH, pore spaces, water holding capacity (WHC), and adsorption capacity for CO 2 , NH 3 , and N 2 . The study revealed that 100 -150 mesh size of zeolite possesses higher values of CEC, WHC, and adsorption capacity for CO 2 , NH 3 , and N 2 compared to EFBOPB, whereas the latter indicated a higher organic-C content and pore spaces. Combination of 75% (w/w) zeolite and 25% (w/w) EFBOPB showed the best composition of these two MPMs to improve WHC of peat and as consequences slowing down the firing process of the peat. Based on the gas adsorption data, it could be assumed that the mixture of MPMs studied could be considered as an effective material to reduce risk of peat from fire potential hazard and retard GHG emission.

Silicon (Si) is a major component of sand, silt and clay particles of soils. Available silica as silicic acid (H4SiO4) present in soil solution is considerably low, only in the range of 3.5–40.0 mg Si L-1. To improve plant-available Si in the soil, silicate-solubilizing fungi (SSF) are potentially important in solubilizing insoluble forms of silicate (SiO2). The objectives of this study were to determine silicate solubilizing capacity and organic acid produced by seven SSF isolates on Bunt and Rovira media by using 0.25% (w/v) magnesium trisilicate (Mg2O8Si3), quartz, and zeolite as a silica source. Determination of SSF isolates potential in Si solubilization was carried out in a completely randomized design with three silica sources and three replicates. The results indicated that all SSF were capable of producing acetic, citrate, and oxalic acids and enhancing the solubilization of insoluble silicates. Trichoderma polysporum and Aspergillus niger BCCF194 were the best isolates of SSF. Furthermore, there was significantly (p<0.05) positive correlation between solubilizing silicate capacity by using quartz or zeolite as a silica source on Bunt and Rovira media with incubation time (R2 = 0.79-0.99) and citric acid production (R2= 0.97-0.99) from T. polysporum and A. niger BCCF194
