The Potential Role of MicroRNA‐124‐3p in Growth, Development, and Reproduction of Schistosoma japonicum

Abstract: The microRNA‐124‐3p plays an important role in regulating development and neurogenesis. Previous microRNA sequencing analyses of Schistosoma japonicum revealed sja-miR-124-3p differential expression patterns in schistosomes from different hosts and at different developmental stages. This study explores the regulatory role of sja-miR-124-3p in S. japonicum development and reproduction. Quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) showed that the expression level of sja-miR-124-3p in S. japonicum from resist… Show more

“…On the other hand, miR-124 and miR-568 were also signi cantly downregulated in this study and for the rst time reported as related to bovine mastitis. According to literature, miR-124 was already described as regulating Schistosoma japonicum and Fasciola gigantica parasitic pathogenesis in both bovine and buffalo [42][43][44]. Intriguingly, miR-568 inhibitory activity on CD4 + T cells was previously demonstrated suggesting a role in the modulation of lymphocytes activity [45].…”

“…The investigators claimed that the balanced expression of SjmiR-124-3p in different developmental stages was required for development and reproduction through regulation of neurosecretory cells releasing essential molecules for survival. In contrast, its overexpression inhibited parasite antioxidants production leading to growth impairment [11] .…”

“…13 The search for alternative means of infection control has resulted in the identification of candidate vaccine targets (e.g. G4LZI3 protein, aspartyl aminopeptidase, microRNA-124-3p, S. mansoni cathepsin B1 and L3) [14][15][16][17][18] that, while promising, are presently unavailable for large-scale use. 19 For all these reasons, new and sustainable strategies are urgently needed to control the disease and limit immunopathology.…”
