The Potential of MiRNAs as Biomarkers and Therapy Targets for Cancer

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the signaling circuits regulation within a cell and their deregulation plays an important role in cancer development and progression. In this review, we discussed miRNA biogenesis, miRNA function and the effect of miRNA abnormalities in cellular pathways that led to transformation of normal cells into cancer cells, as well as the indication of miRNAs as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of various types of cancer, as biomarkers to predict the response to cancer therapy an… Show more

“…RNAse found in body fluids can degrade molecules, especially mRNA. MiRNA-21 can remain stable on heating, very low or high pH levels, long storage times, and repeated freeze-thawing ( 8 ). Apart from being stable, miRNA-21 testing is easy to detect and shows accurate results by using standard techniques such as RT-PCR, microarray and small RNA sequencing ( 9 ).…”

“…Overexpression of MiRNA-21 in cancer causes cell motility and invasion to increase. MiRNA-21 acts as an oncogene by targeting specific genes such as PDCD4, PTEN, Bcl-2, STAT3 and so on [10][11][12] . Another miRNA family in NPC was miRNA-29c which serves as a tumor suppressor gene.…”
