Mangrove pit vipers (Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus) occur in mangrove forests throughout Singapore (= type locality), eastern Sumatra, along the western coast of the Malay Peninsula, Thailand, and northwards to Myanmar and Bangladesh (Uetz et al., 2019). In central Myanmar, T. purpureomaculatus overlaps with another species of pit viper, T. erythrurus (Leviton et al., 2003). The latter species ranges from central and northern Myanmar, northwards to Bangladesh, Bhutan, northeast India, and Nepal (type locality = Ganges Delta; Uetz et al., 2019) with a disjunct population recently discovered in Kakinada on the Circar Coast of India (Deuti et al., 2021). While T. purpureomaculatus occurs exclusively in mangrove habitats, T. erythrurus can be found in both mangroves as well as moist, mesic/riparian habitats away from mangroves including rainforests and moist deciduous forests (

The Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia (FDPM) has received reports of coastal erosion and the death of mangrove trees in some parts of Tanjung Burung Forest Reserve, in the Kinta/Manjung area. This forest reserve especially on the southern part serves as a natural protector to Pantai Remis – an economically important coastal town in that area. To investigate the shoreline changes and its impact on mangrove stands, eight scenes of Landsat and SPOT-6 images from 1988 to 2020 were used. Shoreline extraction was performed using the classification technique and reclassify function, while statistics of shoreline change rate were measured using Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) tool. Normalized Different Vegetation Index (NDVI) analysis was also conducted to assess the condition of mangrove stands in the study area. Shoreline changes in the study area showed an erosion trend of up to 733.33 m with rate of change from -3.01 m/y to -23.43 m/y. This indicates many areas are experiencing critical erosion according to National Coastal Erosion Study (NCES) 2015. The results of this study can provide an overview of the current coastal erosion as well as an input for the authorities in taking appropriate necessary measures to protect this forest reserve.

Ekosistem hutan mangrove sejatinya memiliki potensial produksi yang sangat tinggi. Tidak diragukan lagi bahwa hutan mangrove mampu meredam kecepatan dan kekuatan gelombang. Ekosistem mangrove sangat rentang jika dihadapkan dengan perkembangan kota. Kenyataannya, proyek tersebut terkadang bersinggungan langsung dengan masyarakat. Masyarakat yang merasakan dampak yang paling besar adalah nelayan. Pemerintah terkadang secara paksa memperoleh hak atas wilayah pesisir dari masyarakat, kemudian membuka hutan mangrove, lalu menimbunnya dengan pasir untuk kepentingan pembangunan proyek. Penelitian terbaru mengenai kematian spesies mangrove menjelaskan bahwa spesies yang tergolong dalam mangrove mungkin terpengaruh oleh perubahan iklim dunia. Rehabilitasi merupakan strategi kunci untuk mengimbangi deforestasi mangrove yang terus berlanjut di seluruh wilayah tropis.
