Blue Infrastructure (BI) is a system of water-based ecological and engineering interactions that provides multiple social and ecosystem benefits in an urbanized environment. The study answers the questions: (1) Can the assessment of the attractiveness of residential areas be influenced by the availability of water reservoirs with a specific functionality? (2) What are the indicators that determine this impact? The research aimed to develop a methodology for the evaluation of residential neighborhood spaces, considering the indicator of the functional value of water bodies and their accessibility. The following research hypothesis, that the recreational and esthetic functions of water bodies along with the accompanying infrastructure are the most attractive features that hold the greatest significance in evaluating residential areas close to them, was verified. Cartographic and field inventory studies were conducted to prove this. An inventory form was applied along with social research using a geo-survey to determine the ranking of individual water bodies. As part of the test of the developed method, all water bodies in the city of Olsztyn (northern Poland) were evaluated. The test revealed that the indicators related to the functional value of water bodies and their accessibility influence the assessment of the residential neighborhoods’ attractiveness. Therefore, they should be considered in the assessment of cities containing both natural and anthropogenic water bodies.

Motives: In the era of ageing population and threats arising from economic and geopolitical circumstances there is a need to adapt housing estates to different social groups, especially older persons as a particularly vulnerable group.Aim: The research objective of the article was to study the relevance of selected elements of infrastructure in open residential spaces regarding the safety in the eyes of older people in the face of various threats, such as pandemics and military conflicts.Methods: A questionnaire was developed to investigate the level of significance of selected elements of infrastructure based on in-depth literature research. The questionnaire survey was conducted twice on two random population samples (October 2021 and March/April 2022) in five chosen Polish cities (capitals of voivodeships).Results: Changes in the perceived importance of factors associated with residential safety were identified in the face of two types of threats. Urban planning solutions that contribute to a sense of security were identified in different gender and age groups. Public open spaces in cities should be accessible, user-friendly, and safe; they should promote social interactions with other residents, be aesthetically appealing, and encourage social activation.

Multi-Scale Toolbox: An Automated ArcGIS Tool for Evaluating Pupil–Teacher Ratios in U.S. Public School Districts

Due to the teacher shortage in the U.S., an automatic toolbox with secondary development based on the ArcPy package was created to explore the spatial imbalance of the pupil–teacher ratio. It consists of four tools (or toolsets) for multi-scale spatial visualization, a sensitivity analysis with a heat map, the ordinary least squares regression with spatial autocorrelation, and the random forest tree regression. This study demonstrated the application of the toolset in the evaluation of educational resource spatial misallocation. Firstly, multi-scale analysis results showed that, the loss of teachers was mainly distributed in Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and California from the state level, while it focused on such counties as Terrebonne Parish, Concordia Parish, and Bienville Parish in Louisiana in the county level. Secondly, it was found through heatmap sensitivity analysis that pupil–teacher ratios were highly related to low levels of student support services staff, free lunch programs, and low levels of local education agency (LEA) administrators. Then, the OLS tool was used to automatically calculate the spatial weighted matrix, the Moran I, R2, and AICC indices, AdjR2, F-Stat, F-Prob, and the Wald statistic, which showed whether the model was significant or not. This was followed by random forest tree regression modeling, which found that the LEA administrative support staff and the totally free lunch number highly impacted pupil–teacher ratios. Besides, the designed tool provided ribbons for the Common Core of Data (CCD) to link to other data sources.
