Effective conservation and management of wildlife in the current changing world, call for incorporation of infectious zoonotic diseases surveillance systems, among other interventions. One of such diseases is echinococcosis, a zoonotic disease caused by Echinococcus species. This disease exists in two distinct life cycle patterns, the domestic and wildlife cycles. To investigate possible inter-links between these cycles in Kenya, 729 fecal samples from wild carnivores and 406 from domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) collected from Maasai Mara and Samburu National Reserves were analyzed. Taeniid eggs were isolated by zinc chloride sieving-flotation method and subjected to polymerase chain reaction of nicotinamide adenine dehydrogenase subunit 1 (NAD1). Subsequent amplicons were sequenced, edited and analyzed with GENtle VI.94 program. The samples were further subjected to molecular identification of specific host species origin. All sequences obtained were compared with those in Gene-bank using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The study found that there were 74 taeniid positive samples, 53 from wild carnivores and 21 from domestic dogs. In wildlife, mixed infections with Echinococcus and Taenia species were identified and these included E. granulosus sensu stricto, E. felidis, T. canadensis G6/7, Taenia hydatigena, T. multiceps, and T. saginata. Domestic dogs harbored Echinococcus and Taenia species similar to wild carnivores including E. granulosus G1–3, E. felidis, T. multiceps, T. hydatigena, and T. madoquae. Taenia species of nine taeniid eggs were not identified. Majority of genotypes were found in hyena (Crocuta crocuta) fecal samples. Distribution of Echinococcus and Taenia spp. varied with hosts. Mixed infections of Echinococcus spp, T. multiceps and T. hydatigena in a single animal were common. There seemed to be existence of interactions between the two cycles, although public health consequences are unknown. The presence of T. saginata in hyena suggests scavenging of human fecal matter by the animal. In addition, presence of T. multiceps, T hydatigena, T madoquae and T. saginata in the two cycles suggested possible human exposure to these parasites. The results are important in drawing up of strategies and policies towards prevention and control of Echinococcosis and other Taenia related parasitic infections, especially in endemic areas given their potential risk to public and socio- economic livelihood.

ABSTRAKPenurunan keanekaragaman hayati umumnya disebabkan oleh adanya degradasi sumberdaya hayati dan kurangnya upaya konservasi. Oleh karena itu, salah satu upaya konservasi sumberdaya alam dapat dilakukan dengan mengintegrasikan kearifan lokal masyarakat dalam melestarikan lingkungan yang berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Oktober 2016-Februari 2017 di Hutan Pelawan, Kabupaten Bangka Tengah, Bangka Belitung. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah observasi, wawancara secara mendalam (In-depth Interview) dan FGD (Focus Group Discussion) yang terbagi menjadi small group discussion dan final group discussion. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sejarah penamaan Hutan Pelawan berasal dari pohon pelawan (Tristaniopsis merguensis Griff.) yang mendominasi kawasan hutan tersebut. Hutan ini mengalami pro dan kontra sebelum ditetapkan sebagai kawasan Taman Keanekaragaman Hayati (Taman Kehati) Kabupaten Bangka Tengah. Pada saat ini, kondisi hutan tersebut telah memiliki tiga fungsi utama yaitu: konservasi sumberdaya hayati, pembangunan berkelanjutan, dan logistic support (penelitian, pendidikan, dan monitoring). Kearifan lokal masyarakat yang masih terjaga dan berkaitan langsung dengan upaya konservasi sumberdaya alam Hutan Pelawan masih dapat ditemukan seperti tradisi musung madu dengan cara membuat sunggau untuk mendapatkan hasil berupa air madu dari Apis dorsata (madu liar). Selain itu, masyarakat juga masih mempercayai tentang mitos tumbuh jamur Pelawan (Heimioporus sp.) yang hanya dapat tumbuh pada inang pohon T. merguensis disaat adanya hujan petir. Oleh karena itu, perlunya mengintegrasikan kearifan lokal masyarakat dalam mendukung upaya konservasi dengan merevitalisasi dan mereaktualisasi kearifan lokal tersebut yang diberi dasar hukum sebagai dasar kekuatan masyarakat, serta perlunya kajian penelitian yang ilmiah dalam mendukung kearifan lokal sebagai upaya konservasi lingkungan sehingga memberi dampak positif bagi kehidupan masyarakat tersebut.Kata kunci: Kearifan lokal, sumberdaya hayati, konservasi, hutan pelawan. Orchid is a plant with a high aesthetic value.The existence of orchids directly by the community from their natural habitat, causing the existence of orchid in nature was threatened. The potential of orchid diversity in the Gebugan Nature Reserve area needs exploration to maintain its sustainability. This research would explore the diversity and abundance of orchid species and determined the environmental conditionof Gebugan Nature Reserve. The study was done on 2 stations with altitude difference are 900 m asl and 1045 m asl. Five plots of 10 m x 10 m were systematically constructed at each station with a distance of plots 50 meters. Species of orchids found in the Gebugan Nature Reserve were 12 species, including 11 species of epiphytic orchids and 1 species of terrestrial orchids. The abundance of individual orchid species was relatively higher in places with higher altitudes. Micropera sp was the most abundant orchid species and Corymborkis veratrifolia was the species of orchid with the lowest abundance. It is found that the environmental conditions of Gebugan Nature Reserve are suitable for orchid. The novelty of the research is providing a new data base of orchid in the Gebugan Nature Reserve. The result of the study would be beneficial for developing strategy of genetic conservation of orchird germplasm.
