The Potential of Compact Libs System with Multi-Pulse Nd:YAG Laser for Bacteria Identification

Abstract: This work shows the potential of a very compact, portable Laser Induced-Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) system that includes low cost and compact Nd:YAG laser, intended for use in fieldwork identification of bacteria. This device allows for the generation of 2-4 pulses per laser shot, with a maximum energy of 120 mJ per pulse. Each pulse has a duration of 60 ns, and the total duration of the train of pulses is 180 µs. The device dimensions including the power supply are 50 × 20 × 140 cm, which indicates that can… Show more

“…A key factor when studying the types and sources of INPs is their composition 11 , 12 . Recent studies have also demonstrated the potential of composition analysis methods in identifying pathogens 13 , 14 . As the particles are scarce in both environments, the composition analysis should be conducted on a single particle level.…”

“…In the latter case, an analysis of the intensities ratios of emission lines in the LIBS spectra can serve as an indicator of the level of a pathology. Using the LIBS technology, it is possible to identify various types of fungi and bacteria [16,17]. For example, the Candida LIBS spectrum reveals the elements C, N, H, O, and CN [17].…”

“…Much effort has been put into improving the capabilities of LIBS in recent years, and this is the focus of our work. Some researchers have used multi-pulse 31,32 , magnetic confinement 33,34 , space constraints 34,35 , inert gases 35 , and other techniques to improve LIBS signals and the sensitivity of LIBS method. These methods require the LIBS system to be modified and are not suitable for determining harmful chemicals on the surfaces of fruit and vegetables.…”
