The last decade saw the emergence of highly autonomous, flexible, re-configurable Cyber-Physical Systems. Research in this domain has been enhanced by the use of high-fidelity simulations, including Digital Twins, which are virtual representations connected to real assets. Digital Twins have been used for process supervision, prediction, or interaction with physical assets. Interaction with Digital Twins is enhanced by Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, and Industry 5.0-focused research is evolving with the involvement of the human aspect in Digital Twins. This paper aims to review recent research on Human-Centric Digital Twins (HCDTs) and their enabling technologies. A systematic literature review is performed using the VOSviewer keyword mapping technique. Current technologies such as motion sensors, biological sensors, computational intelligence, simulation, and visualization tools are studied for the development of HCDTs in promising application areas. Domain-specific frameworks and guidelines are formed for different HCDT applications that highlight the workflow and desired outcomes, such as the training of AI models, the optimization of ergonomics, the security policy, task allocation, etc. A guideline and comparative analysis for the effective development of HCDTs are created based on the criteria of Machine Learning requirements, sensors, interfaces, and Human Digital Twin inputs.

This paper contributes to an interesting method of Digital Twin (DT)-assisted Augmented Reality (AR) application for the Thermal-Energy-Storage chiller plant facility management. AR with DT can greatly facilitate management and maintenance of complex Thermal-Energy-Storage Chiller Plants with better and remote accessibility, as well as improved communication among staff. This involves utilizing AR for viewing the chiller plant with related maintenance details. Besides, this application will be assisted by DT to allow a real-time update about when certain components are maintained. The manager can input information regarding maintenance tasks he wants to be completed using the AR application. A chiller plant is an unsuitable and noisy environment with various pieces of equipment for some individuals. Moreover, sometimes a chiller plant is situated in the basement and requires the manager to physically perform supervision visits. This paper provides an innovative framework that will allow facility managers to maintain and manage the chiller plants remotely. Furthermore, it also provides an opportunity for disabled people to pursue such management roles as they can simply view and manage from their smartphones.

This study investigates the promising potential of integrating Augmented Reality (AR) and Digital Twin (DT) technologies within the context of Thermal-Energy-Storage (TES) chiller plants' facility management. The objective is to address the challenges posed by noise and discomfort, while also enhancing the efficiency of maintenance tasks. Drawing insights from a survey involving 17 facility management experts, the research unveils that 76.47% of respondents perceived the chiller plant environment as noisy, with 35.29% reporting discomfort. The outcomes reveal a clear inclination towards AR, preferred over Virtual Reality (VR) due to its accessibility and user-friendliness, requiring no additional equipment. Participants laud the remote accessibility and real-time updates facilitated by the AR application enriched with DT assistance. Nevertheless, the study underscores the importance of factoring in hardware limitations and device compatibility during the implementation of AR solutions. Overall, the outcomes affirm the viability and advantages of harnessing AR and DT technologies for enhancing facility management practices in TES chiller plants, all the while acknowledging the avenues for future research and enhancements.
