Objective This study aims to survey medical students interested in ophthalmology about how changes in electives and Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) due to the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have affected their attitudes toward applying to ophthalmology residency. Design This is a cross-sectional survey. Participants A total of 32 Canadian medical students interested in ophthalmology responded to the survey. Methods A 32-question survey tool used was developed in consultation with medical students, academic ophthalmologists, and residency program directors. The survey was distributed through e-mail by local ophthalmology interest groups at all of Canada's medical schools. Results Respondents felt that changes in ability to travel for electives significantly decreased their likelihood of applying to ophthalmology residency. Additionally, respondents expressed concerns that lack of travel for electives and in-person CaRMS interviews significantly reduced their chances of successfully matching to ophthalmology. Respondents identified one-on-one video calls with program directors and residents as the initiatives that would best counteract the negative impacts from COVID-19. Increased presence of programs on social media were relatively less valued. Conclusion Canadian medical students interested in ophthalmology have concerns about how changes in electives and the CaRMS match due to COVID-19 will impact their ability to be fairly assessed and successfully match to ophthalmology. Lack of travel for electives and interviews has also resulted in students feeling ill equipped to make informed choices about program selection. However, there remains a sustained interest in ophthalmology among applicants.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of visiting medical student electives and in-person residency interviews in Canada. Orthopedic surgery residency programs are now curtailed in their ability to self-promote and select optimal applicants. Online and social media tools should be adopted to promote programs. Faculty, residents and trainees should aim to attend virtual social and program information events. Applicants should make efforts to learn about the programs by attending events and reaching out to residents, and strengthen their application through research and other activities to demonstrate their interest and commitment to the field of orthopedic surgery. These efforts may help avoid the prospect of qualified candidates being unranked by programs or residency positions being unfilled. These difficult circumstances may serve to engender collaboration and cooperation across residency programs and medical schools and lay the foundation for a thriving interconnected ecosystem of future orthopedic surgeons.

Sejarah pendidikan profesi kedokteran melalui proses yang panjang dan berliku, membutuhkan upaya berkelanjutan yang lebih baik. Tujuan pendidikan profesi adalah untuk mendidik para profesional mengupayakan penyebaran pengetahuan, mempunyai pola pikir kritis dan perilaku etis, kompeten dalam sistem pelayanan kesehatan perorangan dan masyarakat.Pada era pandemi COVID-19, diperlukan pendekatan sistem reformasi pendidikan professional yang terintegrasi dan kepemimpinan yang lebih baik. Pandemi COVID-19 memberikan dampak menyeluruh termasuk pada pendidikan kedokteran. Sebagian besar rotasi mahasiswa kedokteran terhenti terkait pelayanan rumah sakit berfokus pada penanganan COVID-19 dan pembelajaran tatap muka dikelas serta praktik laboratorium ditunda, mahasiswa belajar secara jarak jauh. Pandemi COVID-19 telah merubah pelayanan publik dan potensi perubahan tatalaksana pendidikan kedokteran. Rotasi penugasan yang tinggi antar bagian dan ke berbagai RS jejaring akan meningkatkan risiko peserta didik sebagai faktor penyebab penyebaran. Meskipun demikian+ peserta didik PPDS juga memegang peranan terbesar pada pelayanan medis di RS pendidikan. Terdapat kekhawatiran yang tinggi peserta didik akan dampak COVID-19 pada proses pendidikan mereka.
