Depending on their reproductive strategy, different fish species aim to aggregate or disperse eggs and larvae in their reproductive habitat. Many pelagic species disperse their eggs widely around the potential nursery areas. Larval dispersion or aggregation affects population sub‐structuring, which has important implications in fisheries management and conservation of the natural spatial diversity in populations. The dispersion of larval vendace (Coregonus albula) was quantified in two oligotrophic Finnish lakes, and effects of density and environmental variables on the inter‐annual variation in the larval distribution were examined by analysing spatial abundance data from the lakes from 1999 to 2017. A 3‐D hydrodynamic egg distribution model was used to simulate the larval transport after hatching. Vendace larvae dispersed lake‐wide to both littoral and pelagic zones but, in some littoral hot spots, more larvae aggregated year after year. However, in years of high larval number, the densities increased not only in the hot spots, but generally at all sampling plots. An overall increase in abundance was observed at all sampling sites. The simulations of the egg distribution model supported the hypothesis that the dispersion of the eggs occurs by spawners, i.e. by spawning at several different spawning sites, which are located all around the lake. The dispersion of vendace eggs and larvae can be seen as a bet‐hedging strategy in space and time since in boreal oligotrophic large lakes with fragmented morphology, weather and other environmental factors in spring during hatching varies from year to year spatially in unpredictable manner. Lake‐wide larval dispersion suggests that the subpopulations of adjacent lake deeps may swap considerable amounts of individuals during early life and may not be closed units. Conservation of particular habitats seems unnecessary for Finnish vendace populations where large potential spawning areas in lakes are available.

Spatial and seasonal variation in the abundance and composition of phytoplankton and other basal resources (bacteria, terrestrial detritus) influence the availability of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) for upper trophic levels in lake food webs. We studied accumulation, composition and content of fatty acids in planktivorous vendace (Coregonus albula) muscle tissue during the summer feeding period (May to late September) in six boreal lakes. Vendace muscle fatty acid content increased from ~17.7 mg/g DW to ~28.1 mg/g DW from spring to summer, corresponding to a ~59% increase in total fatty acids. PUFA accounted for 45%-65% of all fatty acids, and the most abundant fatty acid was docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3). The DHA content remained relatively constant throughout the sampling period (~7-8 mg/g DW), but the proportion of DHA decreased from ~40% in spring to ~30% in summer and autumn. The decrease in DHA proportion was due to accumulation of other fatty acids, primarily C 18 PUFA (predominantly synthetised by algae) and monounsaturated fatty acids. A similar fatty acid accumulation pattern was observed in lipid storing copepods, an important prey for planktivorous vendace. The abundance of bacterial and terrestrial biomarker fatty acids in vendace muscle and prey items was low (<5% and <0.1% respectively). The increase in weight and the deposition of internal energy stores in vendace were achieved predominantly by algae-based food chain. This has ecological implications, as vendace requires sufficient lipid stores for reproduction in autumn and survival over winter. Niche Partitioning among Native Ciscoes and Nonnative Rainbow Smelt in Lake Superior

Several species of ciscoes Coregonus, subgenus Leucichthys that are native to the Laurentian Great Lakes are rare or extirpated. The restoration of Coregonus fishes is being actively pursued through stocking, and success may depend on the availability of unoccupied niche space. We described the spring–summer habitat occupancy and diets of three native cisco species (Bloater Coregonus hoyi, Cisco C. artedi, and Kiyi C. Kiyi) and invasive Rainbow Smelt Osmerus mordax in Lake Superior and measured niche overlap among these species for both small and large sizes. The potential habitat area was highest for Cisco and Kiyi, followed by Bloater and Rainbow Smelt. The probability of overlap in habitat occupation, as measured by bathymetric depth, fish capture depth, distance from shore, and fish capture water temperature was highest for small Rainbow Smelt and Cisco. Trophic overlap, as measured by stomach contents and stable isotopes, was highest between small Bloater and Cisco and between large Bloater and Kiyi. All of the species showed significant ontogenetic change in both habitat occupation and diet. The overall niche overlap in spring–summer habitat and diet was greatest between small Cisco and Rainbow Smelt and between large Bloater and Kiyi; however, differences in individual niche dimensions likely limit competition for both species pairs. Synthesizing the diet and habitat niche data revealed nuanced niches that allow these seemingly similar planktivorous species to coexist. Kiyi had the least niche overlap with other cisco species and Rainbow Smelt, so from an available niche perspective Kiyi would be a strong candidate for reintroduction into lakes from which they were extirpated.
