The Potential and Application Areas of Forging Aided by Shear Stress

Abstract: The paper demonstrates the potential of unconventional metal forming method that consists in introducing shear stress at the die/workpiece interface during compression. In practice it can be realized by induction of reciprocating, vertical motion of a punch that adheres strongly to a workpiece. To estimate an effect of the method on the material flow, a relevant finite element model has been developed and the selected results of numerical simulations are presented in the paper. In comparison to the conventiona… Show more

“…In the most deformed regions (at the centre and in corners of the sample) reinforcing particles are distributed more uniformly in the matrix. Compression aided by additional shear stress enables obtaining much higher deformation and more uniform strain distribution on the cross sections perpendicular to the direction of a punch motion [5]. As a result, more homogenous particle distribution and more intensive refinement of microstructure is obtained (Fig.…”

“…Thanks to horizontal, reciprocating motion of the punch during compression, the additional shear stress can be induced in a material subjected to forming. The preliminary numerical simulation results suggest that thanks to this device one can achieve local effective strain in a sample several times higher than by the conventional upsetting [5]. An aim of the presented study was to evaluate the effect of inducing additional shear stress during cold forming on microstructure of cast composites reinforced with ceramic particles.…”
