New TiO2 hybrid composites were prepared from kaolin clay, predried and carbonized biomass, and titanium tetraisopropoxide and explored for tetracycline (TET) and bisphenol A (BPA) removal from water. Overall, the removal rate is 84% for TET and 51% for BPA. The maximum adsorption capacities (q m) are 30 and 23 mg/g for TET and BPA, respectively. These capacities are far greater than those obtained for unmodified TiO2. Increasing the ionic strength of the solution does not change the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. pH changes only slightly change BPA adsorption, while a pH > 7 significantly reduces the adsorption of TET on the material. The Brouers–Sotolongo fractal model best describes the kinetic data for both TET and BPA adsorption, predicting that the adsorption process occurs via a complex mechanism involving various forces of attraction. Temkin and Freundlich isotherms, which best fit the equilibrium adsorption data for TET and BPA, respectively, suggest that adsorption sites are heterogeneous in nature. Overall, the composite materials are much more effective for TET removal from aqueous solution than for BPA. This phenomenon is assigned to a difference in the TET/adsorbent interactions vs the BPA/adsorbent interactions: the decisive factor appears to be favorable electrostatic interactions for TET yielding a more effective TET removal.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A is a chemical agent ubiquitous in plastic consumer products and a toxin capable of disrupting key epigenetic mechanisms in early embryogenesis. It becomes more and more clear that early development changes in epigenetic pathways caused by exposure to toxic substances are associated with various adult diseases. Therefore the need to identify new agents capable of eliminating epigenetic mechanisms failures caused by the bisphenol A toxin becomes evident. Here we suggest lactoferrin as a normalizer of toxicant-induced epigenomic changes. Currently there is no data on the role of lactoferrin as a normalizer of epigenomic disorders under the influence of toxicants. We assume that in mammalian embryogenesis lactoferrin might function as an epigenetic modulating factor. AIM: The aim of the research is to study effects of lactoferrin on the epigenetic status of postimplantation mouse embryos, exposed to bisphenol A in utero. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 3 experimental groups of mice and two control group were used. 1. Mice on the first day of pregnancy, injected with 40 mg/kg of body weight of bisphenol A; 2. Mice on the first day of pregnancy, injected with 50 mg/kg of body weight of lactoferrin; 3. Mice on the first day of pregnancy, successively injected with 50 mg/kg body weight of lactoferrin and 40 mg/kg of body weight of bisphenol A. On the 15th day of embryonic development, the level of genome-wide DNA methylation was evaluated in different body parts of the embryos by methyl-sensitive restriction and ImageJ visualization analysis. RESULTS: We demonstrated that in post-implantation mouse embryos, exposure to bisphenol A in the prenatal period caused an increased level of genome-wide DNA methylation. The most prominent effects were observed in brain and abdominal section of the embryos. Together, the present findings confirmed that lactoferrin administration at a dose of 50 mg/kg of body weight resulted in normalization of genome-wide DNA methylation levels after bisphenol A-induced epigenetic alterations. CONCLUSIONS: We assume that lactoferrin may partially neutralize the harmful effects of bisphenol A caused aberrant methylation, and thus can potentially be used as a pharmaceutical product. Factual findings of the present study may help by development of new therapeutic approaches. Nevertheless, further research of the bisphenol A, lactoferrin and lactoferrin + bisphenol A effects on reactive oxygen species and/or antioxidant enzymes is needed.

Effect of Textural Properties on the Degradation of Bisphenol from Industrial Wastewater Effluent in a Photocatalytic Reactor: A Modeling Approach

Conventional treatment methods such as chlorination and ozonation have been proven not to be effective in eliminating and degrading contaminants such as Bisphenol A (BPA) from wastewater. Hence, the degradation of BPA using a photocatalytic reactor has received a lot of attention recently. In this study, a model-based approach using a multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) coupled with back-propagation, as well as support vector machine regression coupled with cubic kernel function (CSVMR) and Gaussian process regression (EQGPR) coupled with exponential quadratic kernel function, were employed to model the relationship between the textural properties such as pore volume (Vp), pore diameter (Vd), crystallite size, and specific surface area (SBET) of erbium- and iron-modified TiO2 photocatalysts in degrading BPA. Parametric analysis revealed that effective degradation of the Bisphenol up to 90% could be achieved using photocatalysts having textural properties of 150 m2/g, 8 nm, 7 nm, and 0.36 cm3/g for SBET, crystallite size, particle diameter, and pore volume, respectively. Fifteen architectures of the MPLNN models were tested to determine the best in terms of predictability of BPA degradation. The performance of each of the MLPNN models was measured using the coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean squared errors (RMSE). The MLPNN architecture comprised of 4 input layers, 14 hidden neurons, and 3 output layers displayed the best performance with R2 of 0.902 and 0.996 for training and testing. The 4-14-3 MLPNN robustly predicted the BPA degradation with an R2 of 0.921 and RMSE of 4.02, which is an indication that a nonlinear relationship exists between the textural properties of the modified TiO2 and the degradation of the BPA. The CSVRM did not show impressive performance as indicated by the R2 of 0.397. Therefore, appropriately modifying the textural properties of the TiO2 will significantly influence the BPA degradability.
