The present study targets to look deep at the influence of Nigella sativa seeds (NSS) supplementation on hematological, blood biochemical measurements, liver and kidney functions and antioxidant enzymes of Arbor Acres broiler chicks. A total of 140 unsexed one day old Arbor Acres broiler chicks were randomly divided into four treatment groups during the period from 1-35 days of age. The chicks were randomly assigned in a straight run experimental design among four treatments, each replicated 7 times with 5 unsexed chicks per replicate. The 1 st group was fed a commercial basal diet without any supplementation (control), the 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th groups were fed control diet supplemented with NSS at 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% levels. Chicks fed basal diet and basal diet without supplementation or with 1.5% NSS had significantly higher RBCs than the 0.5 and 1% NSS supplemented groups. Chicks fed the NSS at 0.5% showed a higher plasma albumin level than the control group, 1 and 1.5 NSS groups. Feeding diet supplemented with 1% NSS had significantly (P≤0.05) achieved the lowest triglyceride and cholesterol compared with chicks fed diet that contained 0.5 and 1.5% NS seeds groups. Significantly (P≤0.05) higher high-density lipoprotein (HDL) was recorded in chick fed diet that contained 1.5% NSS compared with the control and the other treatments. Chicks fed diet that contained 1% NSS had significantly (P≤0.05) achieved a lower plasma aspartate amino transferase (AST). All of supplementation with different NSS levels had a significantly (P≤0.05) higher plasma creatinine and lower plasma urea to creatinine ratio than the control group. Chicks fed diet contained 0.5% NSS had significantly (P≤0.05) achieved a higher plasma superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity compared with the control, 1 and 1.5% NSS supplemented groups. Chicks fed the diet containing 1% NSS showed higher plasma glutathione level than the control group, 0.5 and 1.5% NSS groups. Feeding diet with supplemented 0.5 and 1.5% NSS were significantly (P≤0.05) increased plasma glutathione reductase and catalase compared with the control and 1% NSS groups. Conclusion: These findings indicated that NSS had improved lipid profile, liver function and antioxidant profile of broiler chicks. Thus, 1% NSS is considered safe due to having no acute toxic side effects as reported through the experimental period.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Nigella sativa (NS) seed supplementation on hematology, acid-base parameters, and serum biochemical parameters in Nubian goats fed an Aflatoxin-contaminated diet. In a completely randomized design, 20 growing male goats (aged 8-9 months; 11±0.5 kg) were allocated to five treatments (4 goats/treatment). The control group (G1) received a basal diet. The treatment groups received the same diet contaminated with 150 ppb Aflatoxin (G2), and other treatments received an Aflatoxin-contaminated diet supplemented with different levels of crushed NS seeds 2% (G3), 4% (G4), and 6% (G5). Blood samples were collected after 40 day feeding period to determine blood pH, glucose, hematological and biochemical parameters. Statistical analysis was performed to assess the significant differences among the treatments. Hemoglobin concentration (Hb), total erythrocytes count (TEC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), serum total protein (TP), and globulins (GB) were significantly (P≤0.05) decreased by Aflatoxin-contaminated diet, whereas total leukocytes count (TLC) increased (P≤0.05). Supplementing NS seeds to an Aflatoxin-contaminated diet significantly (P≤0.05) increased Hb, TEC, TP, and GB. Lipid profile and serum liver enzymes were significantly (P≤0.05) increased by an Aflatoxin-contaminated diet. Supplementing NS seeds to an Aflatoxin-contaminated diet caused a decrease (P≤0.05) in lipid profile and serum liver enzymes. Supplementing NS seeds to an Aflatoxin-contaminated diet resulted in a good performance and improved physiological status, the superior effect to an Aflatoxin-contaminated diet supplemented with 6% NS seeds. The study recommended supplementing 6% NS seeds to goat diets to reduce suspected Aflatoxin contamination. Further investigations are needed to assess the protective effect of NS seeds in other animal species fed on Aflatoxin-contaminated diets.

Background and Objectives: Amikacin (AMK) has long been utilized as a gainful antibiotic in preventing Gram-negative infections. Despite all the profitable impacts, amikacin has significant nephrotoxic side effects. The possible protective effects of atorvastatin (ATO) and/or black seed (Nigella sativa) oil (NSO) were evaluated in rats with amikacin-induced acute renal damage, in which generation of reactive oxygen species plays a noteworthy role. Methods: Rats were treated with AMK (30 mg/kg body weight/day, subcutaneously) alone or with ATO (5 mg/kg/day, by gavage) and/or NSO (400 mg/kg/day, by gavage) for 2 weeks. Nephrotoxicity was assessed using serum parameters in addition to tissue biomarkers of oxidative stress as well as renal histopathology. Results: Rats insulted with AMK showed increased serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. Besides, AMK significantly decreased the antioxidant capacity as reflected by the change in levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and activities of reduced glutathione (GSH) and catalase (CAT) in the study. This was supported by the presence of marked morphological alterations of the kidney. Whereas pre-treatment with NSO alone protected the rats from AMKinduced renal toxicity, the nephroprotective effects of NSO-ATO combination were more potent than either of the two drugs alone. The simultaneous use of atorvastatin and NS oil resulted in a significant improvement of the above parameters of kidney functions and markers of oxidative stress as well as attenuation of histopathological alterations. Interpretation and Conclusion: Taken together, the present results indicate that the combination of ATO and NSO significantly minimizes AMK-induced nephrotoxicity in albino rats, may be due to their antioxidant properties.
