The aim of our research was to assess the effectiveness of phytoextraction of heavy metals from sewage sludge by 'Rubik' and 'Albik' varieties of Jerusalem artichoke. The 6-year field experiment involved four levels of fertilization with sewage sludge at doses of 0,10,20,40, . The research evaluated the amount of Jerusalem artichoke yield as well as the uptake and use of heavy metals by the Jerusalem artichoke varieties.It was established that increasing doses of sewage sludge had significantly increased the yield of the Jerusalem artichoke varieties. Increasing doses of sewage sludge also had a significant effect on the increase in the content of heavy metals in aboveground parts of plants. The highest heavy metal uptake with the yield of the Jerusalem artichoke varieties was observed at a dose of 60 Mg DM • ha -1. Among the tested varieties of Jerusalem artichoke, Albik had higher yield, higher content and uptake of heavy metals, and greater recovery of these elements as compared to Rubik. Therefore, based on the obtained research results, Albik can be recommended for phytosequestration of heavy metals from sewage sludge amended soil.

Abstract. The paper presents historical background, up-to-date situation and future perspectives for the development of nutrient pollution threats to European surface water quality, as well as the evolution of the approach to water pollution. Utilized agricultural area in European countries is slightly diminishing, however the consumption of mineral fertilisers is steadily increasing. The consumption in Europe in the years 2015-2030 is projected to increase by 10%, and in the world by 20%. Both climate changes leading to the increase of temperature even of ca. 6°C (in comparison to the pre-industrial period) and accelerated soil erosion due to high intensity rainfall cause increased productivity of water ecosystems. Those aspects have to be taken into consideration in water management. Due to legal regulations introduced in the last twenty years, wastewater treatment has been made more effective and population connected to wastewater treatment systems has increased. The improvement has been seen mainly in eastern and southern parts of Europe. After the implementation of Water Framework Directive theories regarding modern water management have been developed, with the aim to increase the ecosystem's capacity and its resilience to climate changes and anthropopressure.

More than 30% of the world's food production is wasted. Organic waste and residues are produced in a variety of sectors, including agriculture, food industry and forestry. Residues and waste are generated throughout the entire food production and use cycle: surplus food production, processing and distribution, and consumption. Some food that has not been consumed should be managed. Bioconversion using insects provides the opportunity to produce feed and energy using by-products of the agro-food industry. The aim of the work was to present the concept of "IN OIL: an innovative method for the bioconversion of by-products from food processing industry" under the project LIDER VII (co-financed by the National Centre for Research and Development). Project IN OIL is being implemented at the Poznań University of Life Sciences. IN-OIL's main assumption is combining two ideas -waste into energy and waste into feed. The developed method will reduce the adverse impact of unused food on the environment by using ReFood products in insect feeding (Hermetia illucens). H. illucens (Black Soldier Fly) is a Diptera characterized by a very high index of growth, and rich source of fats and proteins. The main assumption of the project is based on the introduction of by-products from the food processing industry to feeding with larvae of H. illucens. Biomass of insect larvae will then be processed into products that will be used for feed and energy purposes.
