Background: Pain after spinal cord injury (SCI) is common, and physiotherapy plays a pivotal role in alleviating pain for people with SCI.Objective: To determine the modalities that physiotherapists in South Africa use to treat SCI-related pain and the factors that guide the selection of treatment modalities.Method: A quantitative, cross-sectional design using a self-developed online survey was distributed to physiotherapists belonging to the South African Society of Physiotherapy and the Physiotherapy Association of South Africa. Data were analysed using SPSS v26, where descriptive data were analysed using frequency, percentages, means and standard deviations, and Fisher’s exact tests for inferential analyses. Open-ended questions underwent thematic analysis.Results: Forty-six responses were received. The most-used modalities were transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (29.8%), exercises (27.7%) and joint mobilisations (29.8%). Most physiotherapists used standardised measurements to objectively assess pain characteristics, with the visual analog scale being the most used (70.2%). Except for the cost of treatment, the factors that guided the selection of the modalities included the pain type, onset, duration, location and intensity, pain interference, duration of treatment, patient’s preferences, other treatments that the patient was receiving for pain and psychosocial factors (87.2%).Conclusions: Local physiotherapists use pain management modalities that are supported by the evidence to treat SCI-related pain.Clinical implications: This study highlights the common modalities used by physiotherapists to treat SCI-related pain, as well as the selection criteria for the modalities. Owing to the low response rate, we caution against generalising these findings across the SCI pain management field.

Abstract. Hamzah N, Husna, Ruslin, Arba M. 2022. The application of medicinal plants in the local community of Gantara Forest, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 6557-6563. The local community around Forest Management Unit (FMU) Gantara (Gantara Forest) has traditionally utilized medicinal plants, especially people in Liwu Metingki Village of Muna District, Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, yet the least information on its application has been recorded. This study investigated the traditional application of medicinal plants by the local community nearby Gantara Forest, specifically Liwu Metingki Village. Exploratory research was implemented using the multi-method approach of field observation and a semi-structured interview with 17 traditional practitioners living around Gantara Forest. The study successfully collected and identified 34 potential medicinal plants in 20 families to treat 21 diseases. Most plants have a habitus of the tree (39%), which 67% of the local community apply as traditional herbs. Boiling has become the most popular practice in using medicinal plants of the local community (45%) to obtain benefits from the plants against internal diseases (37%). This finding demonstrates the vital role of sustainable management of Gantara Forest for human health. With this finding, the community is strongly expected to understand the significant role of medicinal plants, so they can attempt to protect the plants by, for example, planting them in their yards.

Introdução: A bandagem cinesiológica e um tratamento não farmacológico de baixo custo, simples e de fácil aplicação, que tem como função atuar na redução da dor, no edema local e na melhora da atividade muscular. Objetivo: Avaliar a associação entre o uso da bandagem compressiva na ocorrência de dor pós-operatória em mulheres submetidas a mastectomia no Hospital do Câncer III do Instituto Nacional de Câncer (HC III/INCA). Método: Ensaio clinico randomizado com 106 mulheres submetidas a mastectomia entre marco e novembro de 2021. As pacientes, após sorteio, foram designadas para um grupo controle de cuidados de rotina da instituição e para um grupo intervenção, em que foi acrescida, aos cuidados de rotina, a aplicação da bandagem compressiva na região do plastrão no primeiro dia (D1) do pós-operatório. Foram avaliadas dor, parestesia, amplitude de movimento e síndrome da rede axilar no D1, na primeira semana (D7) e no primeiro mês (D30) após a cirurgia. Resultados: Os dois grupos foram similares com relação aos dados demográficos e clínicos. Não houve diferença significativa na presença de dor no local da aplicação (nas avaliações D7 e D30) sendo 24,1% e 27,8% para o grupo da bandagem compressiva (p=0,102) e 11,8% e 17,6% para o grupo controle (p=0,217). Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa para qualquer desfecho avaliado. Conclusão: O uso da bandagem compressiva no pós-operatório imediato não esteve associado a dor e a outras complicações nas avaliações de sete e 30 dias de pós-operatório de mastectomias.
