The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) for Schizophrenia

Abstract: The variable results of positive-negative research with schizophrenics underscore the importance of well-characterized, standardized measurement techniques. We report on the development and initial standardization of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) for typological and dimensional assessment. Based on two established psychiatric rating systems, the 30-item PANSS was conceived as an operationalized, drug-sensitive instrument that provides balanced representation of positive and negative symptoms… Show more

“…Assessment of the patient’s clinical state was performed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) [37,38], which includes 30 items, scored on a seven-point severity scale, that provide an overall score for positive symptoms (seven items) and negative symptoms (seven items), and a general measure of psychopathology (16 items) [14]. The questionnaire is interviewer-administered, requiring a 30–40 minute semi-formal psychiatric interview [38].…”

“…This analysis involved multiple statistical tests, including repeated measures analysis, to assess whether patients with greater symptomatology at baseline were more likely to show change with treatment 13. The analysis of this population considered Marder factors and included an assessment of dose (≤20 mg, ≥50 mg) using a repeated measures analysis of covariance and a Tukey post hoc analysis.…”

“…The short form of the Korean‐Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale was used to evaluate IQ (Yeom, Park, Oh, & Lee, 1992). The patients' symptom severities were assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (Kay, Flszbein, & Opfer, 1987). All of the patients were taking at least one antipsychotic medication, and their symptoms and medication doses were stable at the time of the study.…”
