The Portfolio: Should It Also Be Used by Administrators?

Abstract

Portfolios can be the catalyst for valuable self-reflection. Perhaps potential and practicing administrators could also benefit from developing a portfolio. n growing numbers of elementary, secondary, and university classrooms, portfolios provide a means of assessing both student and teacher progress.As students and teachers choose the components of the portfolio and become involved in their own learning and assessment, they become more reflective. These portfolios also reveal important information to the reviewer.If portfolios effectively serve these purposes for students and teachers (Vavrus, 1989; Tierney, Carter, and Desai, 1991), perhaps potential and practicing administrators could also benefit from portfolio development. The administrative portfolio can be used in the following ways:1. To encourage reflection for improvement 2. To assist in career advancement 3. To be an alternative assessment tool (Brown and Irby, 1991).
