The portacaval space: CT with MR correlation.

Abstract: Between the portal vein and the inferior vena cava lies a small space that may be occupied by multiple anatomic structures including the caudate and papillary processes of the caudate lobe of the liver, portacaval lymph nodes, replaced or accessory right hepatic arteries, posterosuperior pancreaticoduodenal vessels, the cystic duct, and the epiploic foramen to the lesser sac. The sectional anatomy of these structures is illustrated in this paper with particular emphasis on the portacaval nodes. Unlike the adja… Show more

“…Zirinsky et al [30] first proposed the concept of a portacaval space, defining it as the gap between the PV and the IVC. Many studies have shown that the caudate lobe of the liver is generally in the upper part of the portacaval space, and the portacaval node, the portacaval vessels, and the cystic duct are in the lower part of the portacaval space [31,32] .…”

“…The caudate process is located between the inferior vena cava and the posterior segment of the right lobe. The sectional anatomy and radiological appearances of these two processes have been well described in the literature [2][3][4]. The PCP is located between the papillary and caudate processes and extends to the area between the roots of the right and middle hepatic veins.…”
