The Porcine Retinal Vasculature Accessed Using an Endovascular Approach: A New Experimental Model for Retinal Ischemia

Abstract: The authors show for the first time that the ophthalmic and retinal artery can be catheterized using a transfemoral endovascular approach. This technique may be useful to produce clear-cut experimental retinal ischemia.

“…The mechanism underlying ischemic retinal degeneration and potential protective interventions are studied in a diversity of animal models (Dimitriu et al 2008;Moren et al 2009;Osborne et al 2004;Vidal-Sanz et al 2000). Similar to cerebral ischemia, the extent and degree of retinal ischemic damage largely depends on the model used and the animal strain and gender (Barnett and Osborne 1995;Davidson et al 2000;Mester et al 2009;Oliff et al 1997;Yamamoto et al 2006).…”

“…In contrast to humans and nonhuman primates, mice lack a macular region. In contrast to previous studies, 8,9 we obtained mfERG responses from areas that could be identified on a retinal image using the SLO. By centering some hexagons of the multifocal stimulus on the ONH and on photocoagulations, we were able to establish a correlation between morphological and functional characteristics.…”

“…In a porcine model of retinal ischemia, ERG was shown to develop decreased amplitude and increased latency, during balloon occlusion of the retinal artery supply. [8] Additionally, total obliteration of retinal perfusion (including collateral circulation) resulted in complete loss of ERG signals. Others have used combined ERG and VEP monitoring during ophthalmic artery surgery and demonstrated the reproducibility of intraoperative ERG recording.…”
