THE POLYSACCHARIDES OFCRYPTOCOCCUS LAURENTII(NRRL Y-1401): PART I

Abstract: The extracellular polysaccharides produced by Cryptococczrs lazrrenlii have been isolated and shown to consist of (A) a n acidic polysaccharide containing D-mannose, D-xylose, and D-glucuronic acid; ( B ) a neutral polysaccharide containing D-glucose only.Preliminary structural studies on the acidic material suggest that it consists of a mannosecontaining backbone with xylose and glucuronic acid as end groups, \vhile the glucan contains 1 -,3 3, 1 --t 4, 1 --t 2, and (or) 1 --t 6 linked residues. “…126. 5 The product was treated a t 100' for 18 h with aqueous barium hydroxide, and the solution was neutralized (COz), filtered, and evaporated. On a paper chromatogram (solvent, n-butanol-ethanolwater (40: 11: 19 v/v/v) ; spray, amtnoniacal silver nitrate) a spot running a t the same rate as glycerol was detected.…”

“…The main heteropolyn~er ( z 80%) has an a-D-(l+3)-linked lnannan main-chain as shown by s~~ccessivc Smith degradations. Partial hydrolysis of the hcteropoly~liers provided several methylpentose-containing oligosaccharide fragments corresponding to possible sidechain components.Canadian Journal of Chemistry, 46, 3407 (1968) Information on the nature of extracellular and been useful as an aid in classification of t h e parent intracellular polysaccharides of yeasts has often organisms (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8).
