The Polypeptides of Hepatitis A Virus

Abstract: Hepatitis A virus was purified from fecal specimens obtained from 3 patients with naturally acquired hepatitis A, by a process of differential centrifugation, chloroform extraction, column chromatography, and isopycnic ultracentrifugation. Analysis of purified virus by discontinuous SDS-PAGE revealed three major polypeptides with molecular weights of 34,000, 25,500, and 23,000 daltons. These polypeptides appear to be specific for hepatitis A virus and have similar molecular weights to three of the four major p… Show more

“…Pooled fractions were exam ined by IEM, and HAV was detected only in fractions where the SPRIA counts and the 260/280 nm ratios were high. (Reproduced from Conlepiset al [25] with permission.) system.…”

“…Hepatitis A virus (HAV), a picornavirus, is probably an enterovirus in terms of its biophysical and biochemical characteristics (Siegl & Fr6sner, 1978a, b;Coulepis et al, 1978), but its biological behaviour, in some respects, is quite different. During the last 3 years, HAV has been propagated in several cell systems (including a human hepatoma cell line) without causing any apparent cytopathic effect and the incubation period is extraordinarily long for a picornavirus.…”
