The Poltava chicken breed of Ukraine: its history, characterization and conservation

Abstract: SummaryPoltava chickens are native to Ukraine, with a remarkable history, genetics and economic traits. They include three varieties: Clay, Cuckoo and Black. The Poltava Clay variety exemplifies what can be achieved by thorough selection in transforming a local, low production chicken population into an established breed with high performance characteristics and selected line structure. Two other varieties, the Cuckoo and Black, are extinct but plans for their restoration are underway.

“…The tested approaches in analyzing SNPs show their high efficiency and will be put into practical use in breeding and preservation programs for small chicken breeds and populations. Importantly, the current thorough phenotypic and genotypic survey involved several remarkable native breeds of Russia and the former USSR including OM [77], YC [78,79], RW [50,51,64], PC [80][81][82][83], PS/PW, RC, MG, UM, and UG. The obtained information will be helpful in their future conservation and commercial use.…”

“…The meat industry in general and the poultry sector specifically essentially rely on the evaluation, characterization, and utilization of genetic diversity inherent in various breeds and lines (e.g., [124][125][126][127][128][129]). In this whole-genome resequencing study, we examined the genetic diversity features in the two divergently selected transboundary meat-type breeds, CRW and PRW, used for producing the Smena 8 broiler cross and compared to the aboriginal cold-tolerant Russian breed of USH.…”

“…It is believed that they were created by the method of folk selection by selecting the best individuals obtained by crossing local birds with imported breeds (New Hampshire, Wyandotte, etc. ), which were brought to Ukraine at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries [Moiseyeva et al 2007]. Targeted selection work with poultry was started in 1948, when it was brought to the Experimental Farm «Birky» from the Poltava region.…”
