First, we argue that sexuality was central to socialist modernization: Sex and gender were reformulated whenever the socialist project was being revised. Expertise was crucial in these reformulations, which harnessed people's support for the changing regimes. Moreover, the role of the expert in society grew over time, leading to ever expanding and diversified fields of expertise. Second, gender and sexuality stood disjointed in these changes. Whereas in the early 1950s sex was a taboo subject in Hungary, in the last three decades of socialism it was gradually acknowledged and emancipated, along with a discursive push to alter gender roles within marriage. Conversely, Czechoslovak experts paid close attention to sexuality and particularly to female pleasure from the outset of the regime, highlighting the benefits of gender equality for conjugal satisfaction; yet, they changed course with Normalization (1969Normalization ( -1989 when they embraced gender hierarchy as the structure for a good marriage and a fulfilling sex life. It follows that gender and sexuality can develop independently: Change in one is not necessarily bound to similar progress in the other. Thus, third, whereas there was a shared initial push for gender equality, there was no unified socialist drive for the liberalization of sexuality.

Abstract:This article looks at the effects the neoliberal university has on feminist pedagogy when it is practised in a programme that stresses geopolitical differences. The material for the study comes from my experience as a teacher of a gender studies class for a US study abroad programme based in Prague, Czech Republic. The richly researched paradoxes of doing feminist pedagogy in the neoliberal university assume fi rm contours when the geopolitical location of both those 'teaching' and those 'taught' becomes the focus and indeed the 'commodity' to be sold. In my article, I focus on my situation as a teacher in an increasingly precarious educational environment in the Czech Republic, exacerbated by the specifi c framing of the US-based programme and its economic-moral rationality. I refl ect on the ethical discontents inadvertently produced by the teaching experience and related commodifi cation of 'difference'. I argue that the geopolitical context of that commodifi cation is crucial for understanding the local forms and impact of the neoliberal university. The contested standing of gender studies in the Czech Republic, which has been shown to stem in part from the post-1989 developments, intersects with the reform of the Czech science system. By exploring how this setting affects the micro-level of class dynamics and lesson content I show that there is a need to study the repercussions of the neoliberal university as geopolitically located.Keywords: transnational feminist teaching, commodifi cation of education, feminist pedagogy, neoliberal university Nyklová, Blanka. 2017. The Pussy Riot affair was a massive international cause célèbre that ignited a widespread movement of support for the jailed activists around the world. The case tells us a lot about Russian society, the Russian state, and Western perceptions of Russia. It also raises gender as a frame of analysis, something that has been largely overlooked in 20 years of work by mainstream political scientists analyzing Russia's transition to democracy. It has important implications for how Western feminist categories can be applied to the Russian context. This introduction summarizes the main events associated with the trail of the three group members who were accused of staging a “punk prayer” performance in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in February 2012. It also introduces the findings of the six papers that make up this special section.
