Abstract: Infrastructures are material forms that allow for the possibility of exchange over space. They are the physical networks through which goods, ideas, waste, power, people, and finance are trafficked. In this article I trace the range of anthropological literature that seeks to theorize infrastructure by drawing on biopolitics, science and technology studies, and theories of technopolitics. “…Agradeço ao apoio do CNPq e ao interesse dos agentes de endemias que permitiram o desenvolvimento da pesquisa. 2 A ideia de infraestrutura forma um pano de fundo para a refl exão e refere-se aqui a um aparato de governamentalidade que pode incluir artefatos, sistemas, instituições, discursos e formas de conhecimento (Larkin, 2013;Star, 1999). “…Social media, mobile apps, online maps, instant messaging, translation websites, wire money transfers, cell phone charging stations, and Wi-Fi hotspots all constitute what we would define as a new digital infrastructure for global movement. According to Larkin (2013), "What distinguishes infrastructures from technologies is that they are objects that create the grounds on which other objects operate, and when they do so they operate as systems" (p. 329). Larkin (2013) further posits that infrastructures can be technological, financial, biological, and social (pp.…”

“…Some anthropologists of infrastructure have critically reexamined Star's claim that infrastructure becomes 'visible upon breakdown' (see Larkin 2013). Their key observation is that infrastructure can take on different meanings and thus different visibilities for different people, at different times, and in different places.…”
