The Polder Computing Environment: a system for interactive distributed simulation

Abstract: SUMMARYThe paper provides an overview of an experimental, Grid-like computing environment, Polder, and its components. Polder offers high-performance computing and interactive simulation facilities to computational science. It was successfully implemented on a wide-area cluster system, the Distributed ASCI Supercomputer. An important issue is an efficient management of resources, in particular multilevel scheduling and migration of tasks that use PVM or sockets. The system can be applied to interactive simulat… Show more

“…In the current implementation of ISS-Conductor, the RTI 1.3NGV5 of HLA [15] is the communication interface between ComAs, and Amzi Prolog [3] is used to implement the reasoning engines in the MAs. ISS-Conductor is part of Polder [18], a distributed computing environment built by the University of Amsterdam.…”

“…References [27] and [28] present a portal for computational physics using Web services, in particular they discuss data manipulation services. The Polder system [29] and SCIRun [30] offer rich visualization capabilities within several applications including biomedicine. SCIRun has been linked to several Grid technologies including NetSolve [31] and it supports a component model (the Common Component Architecture (CCA) [32] not directly covered in this special issue) with powerful workflow capabilities.…”
