The plume diagnostics of 30 cm ion thruster with an advanced plasma diagnostics system

Abstract: In order to achieve a better understanding of plume characteristics of LIPS-300 ion thruster, the beam current density, ion energy and electron number density of LIPS-300 ion thruster plume are studied with an Advanced Plasma Diagnostics System (APDS) which allows for simultaneous in situ measurements of various properties characterizing ion thruster, such as plasma density, plasma potential, plasma temperature and ion beam current densities, ion energy distribution and so on. The results show that the beam cu… Show more

“…The dedicated and integrated PDS [22] consists of seventeen FC, two TLP, a rotary rake, an integrated control system, and an advanced post-processing system used to perform investigation of ICD, plasma potential, plasma density, and electron temperature. The rotary rake controlled by the motor is rotated around the z-axis defined by the thruster exit plane (the thruster coordinates are defined as shown in figure 3), and its rotation radius is 1000 mm.…”

“…The ion backflow phenomenon is responsible for contamination issues such as spacecraft charging and surface erosion [8]. Various plume diagnostics have been conducted in vacuum facilities to investigate the exhaust plasma during EP operations [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Ground tests can accurately characterize the temporal and spatial distributions of the plasma plume.…”

“…Firstly, the emitted ions in ILISs are accelerated to a high velocity of the order of magnitude of 10 5 m s −1 , contributing to a high specific impulse. Besides, no gas discharge is required to produce charged particles compared with plasma sources [13][14][15]. The liquid propellant can be passively fed by capillary force.…”
