The pleiotropic role of melatonin against chromium-induced cardiovascular infirmities: a mechanistic insight

Abstract: Currently, cardiovascular diseases are still the number one killer in the world. These include hypertension, coronary heart disease, ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, etc. One of the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases is environmental heavy metal pollution which makes the victims more vulnerable to sudden cardiac death. Chromium (Cr) is one of the metals. Cr(VI) is the most hazardous one among its variants.  It is readily across the plasma membr… Show more

“…Excessive ROS production can also damage mitochondrial and other organelle membranes, resulting in cellular Ca 2+ overload due to Ca 2+ in ux from calcium stores (Görlach et al, 2015). It has been reported that PD inhibits the activities of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ -ATPase and Na + /K + -ATPase, resulting in Ca 2+ and Na + overload (Ghosh et al, 2022) The transcriptional factor NF-B regulates the expression of various proin ammatory genes and plays a role in in ammasome regulation. All of NF-B actions are mediated by the upregulation of cytokines and chemokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukins (IL-1β, and IL-6), which regulate the activation, differentiation, and survival of innate immune cells (Liu et al, 2017).…”
