The plasma proteins of Labeo umbratus (Smith) and Labeo capensis (Smith)

Abstract: The plasma proteins of L. umbratus and L. capensis have been investigated by means of cellulose-acetate and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Characteristic patterns were obtained for each specie although variations OCCUI within a certain basic framework. Certain fractions were further isolated and approximate average molecular weights were found to vary between 55 000 and above 120 000 and isoelectric points between 5.78 and 4.2. Certain fractions were found to exist in dimeric form. It is concluded that th… Show more

“…These range from three in the coelacanth-latimeria chalumnae (Griffiths et al, 1974) to ten in the mudfish-Labeo spp. (Hattingh, 1974). In most studies, comparison with human serum has been used to assign electrophoretic mobilities and/or identity, In many cases the dominant protein was a P-globulin and not albumin (ao) as in mammals.…”

“…In contrast to the carp (Fourie & Hattingh, 1976) very little seasonal variations was apparent regarding this parameter. A difference in the number of protein fractions was found for L. umbratus and L. capensis when compared with the results of Hattingh (1974a). A slight difference in the separation patterns of these species was also obvious.…”

Species specific electrophoretograms have been found with wide individual variations as well as seasonal fluctuations evident in the concentration of each protein fraction (Uthe, Roberts, Clarke & Tsuyuki, ]966;Fourie&Hattingh, 1976;Van Vuren&Hattingh, 1976).…”
